I set up Win 3.1 to check out the Windows version of F-14 Tomcat: Fleet Defender Gold from GOG. It all works, except for the digitized speech, for which I've tried all kinds of different configurations on the game's sound config and I get no speech synthesis at all. Interestingly if I play the DOS version on DOSBox or DOSBox-X it works from the getgo. Anyone have any idea how to solve this?

You're running Win3.1 in DosBox-X? Did you install the SB16 Windows drivers? Win3.1 should make a chime when opening up.
I'm not familiar with that particular game, but if its "Windows" version is just a short-cut to the DOS executable, then your issue might be DOS memory config under Win3.1.. of course the game won't be any different than the DOS version in that case.

I'm running DOS and Windows 3.1 in 86box, and I did install the SB16 drivers. The game's Win3.1 version is indeed mainly a shortcut to the DOS version (it also does include some tutorial videos and other video based extras for use in Windows), which is why I'm confused I can't get digitized speech to work on it.
