So I've got an ATX power supply converter cable and a nice decent PSU to replace my very old and cheap AT power supply

There seems to be 4 poles on this one and only black and green on my converter cable. Am i correct in thinking i just de-solder the 4 wires and then put my two onto 1 & 2 or 1p & 2p and it will power up my ATX power supply? Or am i missing something?

Also what do i do with the ground which is screwed into the switch/case (green/yellow wire)

Thanks

Nope, you're correct about the wires. The switch for an AT PSU had main power running through it. While an ATX PSU just need that pin (13 I believe) to be grounded. This will make it run. Unground it and it runs off.

You should need to do anything with the screwed down ground wire. You're not running mains power so the chance of the case being electrified if much lower. A modern PSU will just kick into overload and shutdown.

Almost all switches of this type are double pole single throw. The poles are electrically isolated between each side.
You will most likely want to connect your new black where the original black was, and green to where the brown was located. If I'm seeing your picture correctly, that would be between 2 and 2P.

The ground wire can be entirely removed. It is not needed for an ATX style power supply.

Thank you guys! happy to report it was a success and now i have a much newer, far better brand PSU and it's even made the machine near silent. Win win!
