I'm working on a project and it'd be nice to know if there's any way I can make a batch file or something that automatically runs a program in DOSBox when I open it. That is, I'd like to be able to click an icon and have a game run in DOSBox, but still have DOSBox start normally when I run the main program. Is there any way to do this without messing with the configuration file too much? I'm using DOSBox portable, version 0.72.

Great! Yes, I caught the literalism. 😵

Please explain to me how to run games in DOSBox from a batch or custom config.

I just tried that, it didn't work. Here's what was in my batch file (running from the directory ZZT.exe is in):

@echo off
..\..\PortableApps\DOSBoxPortable\DOSBoxPortable.exe ZZT.exe

I ran it, and it loaded DOSBox and gave me the Z: prompt. Do I have to make a custom config file for what I'm trying to do? I'll try to figure that out, I saw it somewhere and thought it might be useful.

nupanick - that looks perfectly correct. Maybe it is this portable version of DOSBox that is playing tricks with you? Try installing the official DOSBox 0.72 in some temporary directory and use that instead.

Ok, I tried using DOSBox version 0.72 and it worked. So I checked the two versions of dosbox.conf and they were identical! 😕

I suppose the PortableApp just handles files differently. I read on the PortableApps news page that version 0.72 has some feature where you can pass it a .conf file when it starts up, how do I do that? I looked it up on the wiki already and only found informarion to the effect that it's possible-- not how to do it.

the portable aps is a better forum
as they modified dosbox so that the default way of handling of exes of dosbox has changed.
