I was trying to record my screen on Windows 7, when I realised the latest OBS doesn't work. I had to go as back as OBS Studio 27.2.4 to make it work.

Other than that, most of the newer versions of DAEMON Tools unlikely work on Windows 7.

I wonder if it's useful to document a list of popular softwares and their lastest version available for Windows 7

Ah the "I-ignoramtly-submitted-myself-to-the-VS2019-runtimes-deadlock-so-those-luddites-who-refused-to-get-the-superior-win10-haha-toobad-w10-is-literally-free-moron-stupid-idiot" shame list that plagued many "For Windows" games and apps around 2020+. It'd probably be never ending. All the smug 'just get the runtimes download' responses don't know that Win10+ had some exclusive runtimes and they get linked. It's worse when there's linking to libraries that introduce the regression (i.e. QT, Python) and they have no interest in fixing themselves.

Also note there's some kernelex-esque independent implementations of the certain runtimes in question to get them through to 7 compatibility and yes it's a new path function gambit.

I can't believe people still think their hobby apps need Microsoft's latest C compiler. The MinGW compiler is free and actually works, unlike Visual Studio, which simply crashed the two times I tried it.

Anyway, 7-Zip, 86Box, DOSBox, FCEUX, IrfanView, K-Meleon, OpenOffice, PCem and Supermium continue to run on Windows 7. Chromium 109, Firefox 115 ESR, Python 3.8 and Wireshark 3.2.14 are the latest releases for it.

Depends on who you ask. Dealing with which version of particular program works on which Windows and what APIs are missing and what not is not something I'm keen on spending my time.

I had a hard time finding an useful Visual Studio and Code. Majorly the big issue is programs which has "api-x-y-z-abc-def.dll" errors

It's strange, typically someone on MSFN will compile a list of final software, but seems Win7 hasn't got one yet?
You could go the otherway this is a list of stuff that dropped Win7 so most likely the version before worked?

Personally though. I've a list of final versions of software for Dos though to XP, then mostly just used the XP version in Win7

@chinny22 any chance you could share the other lists you’ve mentioned?

Has anyone ever tried to run Figma on 7, and do some actual pro work on it at all?

There's this for OBS, no idea if still works for latest version.

That forum reminds a bit of MSFN, with hopefully less toxic community. Though I can't be bothered to sign up, running too old Windows versions is just not for me, prefer to tweak newer versions with shell augmentations, much less stressful than bothering with half-baked extended kernels, hacking EXEs, DLLs and such nonsense.

Win3x (Check the links inside the post)

Win95

Win2k

WinXP
https://msfn.org/board/topic/176299-latest-ve … -running-on-xp/

and this is my list in the Final Ver tab, It's a bit rough but was only meant for my own reference for the limited software I'm interested in (and even then, rarely do I install the software after D-Tools)

BTW
I know Deamon tools 4.49.1 is not the final version but its the last "Clean" version
Same with Netscape, but anything later then 4x has no nostalgic value which is the only reason to install any version anyway!

The last "clean" version w/o spyware of DAEMON Tools I've saved is version 3.47, which is also the last version for Win9x - it can be downloaded from my tools section (-> https://soggi.org/misc/tools.htm).

kind regards

@chinny22 this is amazing! Thanks. I feel like this should be stickied somewhere 😀
