Anyway, it has a sort of fuzzy roughness to the finish that I do not like. I will have to sand it down to get rid of the roughness...

I've found that a cutting compound like car polish is a good way of smoothing out the finish without resorting to sanding. I might also bring back a bit of the smooth 'shine' that unpainted plastic has.

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

I honestly don't think there is an "exact match", especially seeing as every case was "generic beige-grayish" but they were still somewhat different from one another; Not to mention the fact the colours used changed over the years (cases started being brighter and more leaning towards the white in the second half of the 1990s, right before the "we make black cases now!" time started). Also, maybe my memory is a bit faulty, but I remember that even when these cases were new, often the metal panel(s) didn't 100% match the colour of the front plastic...

What I can say is...dont't go the route of the custom mix, unless you wanna spend something like 30 Euro for a 400ml can of paint...done that, got the T-Shirt (and the quite honestly nicely painted vintage case...) to prove it 😀

Well, I thought it was a well known fact that computers in black cases are faster. Something to do with light absorption or heat radiation interacting the the magic smoke perhaps?

Kind of a cross post from "What color is a beige computer", but I ended up renting one and purchasing another color reader.
These are my measurements from a pretty nice standing Macase KS-330: https://colorreader-fm.datacolor.com/palette/dGwJ510R
As this thread is about minimal effort off-the shelf, I would get RAL spray cans in 7032 Pebble Grey, 7044 Silk Grey and 1013 Oyster White and use depending on the case.
I am very fond of Dupli Color RAL and their automotive grade brand Colormatic as a fast dry filler, etc.

Colors listed as close matches in the measurements:

RAL Classic:
RAL 7032 - Pebble Grey (primary)
RAL 7044 - Silk Grey (alt. primary)

Sherwin-Williams:
SW 7051 Analytical Gray
SW 6170 Techno Gray

Akzo Nobel:
F06.06.69
G0.05.70
