When I've recorded a midi song with the SC55 and play it back it sounds like the instruments are different when playing it back only through the SC55, I've noticed if I go to a room in a game while there is no music being played from the game and then play any midi file, stop the file to go back to the game room with midi music the instruments are different aswell, because I guess the games sound fonts get loaded with what the SB55 was using, it doesn't really matter I just can't play anything while in a game but can I have some help to understand why the recorded music has a different sound to it like the instruments are not the correct ones it's also doing this with my MT32. I haven't played back the recorded midi on a pc to see if there is a difference yet

It's fairly intuitive, although "sound font" does not apply here. Presuming you're playing a MIDI from SB-55 while in game with SC-55.
Basically, you're changing the instruments with whatever the MIDI file is using, and then the game isn't adapting. In some cases, it should, but since I don't know what the SB-55 MIDI or SC-55 game music is actually doing, there's too many variables at play to give you specific answers.

The recorded music (SB-55?) having different instruments is more complex and it depends what you mean, and when you're experiencing this.

I apologise I'll say it in the easiest way I can, when a midi song is recorded the playback sounds different even when at the command prompt the instruments are different and sometimes some of the instruments from the song are not there, I tried the midi songs on a windows 10 pc with media player and it sounds much better basically the same as the original song if I had to have a gripe about it it is I think the SB55 doesn't record the falloff, I think that's the term where the notes have no fade out like a keyboard with sustain so it seems like a cheesy copy please excuse my pun but it is still a good recording

I just want to confirm when you say record, you are meaning taking the line out of the audio device and recording to a digital audio file like WAV or MP3?

If I understand correctly, MIDI files that play correctly on SC-55 sound incorrect on SB-55 or other devices. My first guess would be that the MIDI files do not include a proper GM or GS Reset message. Every game is different, some send proper messages, but many don't. When no message is sent, SC-55 will use it's default settings. Since most games were made on SC-55, the default settings work. However, other modules have different default settings, and may not play correctly without a GM or GS Reset.

Long time ago, I downloaded Doom E1M1 MIDI
off of doom world. Was fine on my 55, but broken on my Yamaha MU2000 unless I switched it to GS mode. However, by editing the midi file and adding a GM Reset, it would then play properly in GM/XG mode.

Modules: CM-64, CM-500, SC-55MkII, SC-88 Pro, SY22, TG100, MU2000EX, PLG100-SG, PLG150-DR, PLG150-AN, SG01k, NS5R, GZ-50M, SN-U110-07, SN-U110-10, Pocket Studio 5, DreamBlaster S2, X2, McFly, E-Wave, QWave, CrystalBlaster C2, Yucatan FX, BeepBlaster
