I wanted to replace the dead CMOS battery of an Epson Q150A 8086 laptop and found out that it's a Maxell ER6C lithium battery.

It's a battery with a plastic cap on the top. Does it have any function (other then looking cute 😀)? As it's glued/molted into the lithium battery I rather not break it off to take a look (explosions etc).

If it has no function can I use any off the shelf 3.6v lithium battery (soldering the old cables to it)?

You can use a rechargeable polymer-ion or 18650 lithium-ion battery.

No, it's just to expose some leads you can solder on. This is what it looks like without the cable and insulation:

The ER6C is not rechargeable

It's a 14500 size LiSOCl2 (lithium thionil chloride) non-rechargeable, twice the size (and triple the price) of the 14250 used by most Macs from the II to the first Mini!
I guess you can use a normal rechargeable (lithium cobalt) one, but it's not an ideal application for it (negligible load = no cycling, mostly running down due to self discharge, will probably need taking out and charging every year or so)

Concerned about explosions? Well, go grab your "I Survived" t-shirt: https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/warni … atteries.25169/ 😀

Yes, I know 🙂. But you can solder nickel strips on these batteries.

Thanks all. Just replaced it with a standard non rechargeable 3.6V lithium battery. Works just fine.

Have also ordered a 9.6V 2000mAh battery pack which should arrive tomorrow. Hopefully it will work as well. Would be nice to have this 6.5kg (14.3 pounds) laptop on the go. 😜
