good morning to all

a few years ago i build a windows 98/xp retro gaming pc .
my specs are the following:

p4 3.0 northwood
Biostar P4VMA-M
512mb ram
nvidia fx 5500
creative live 5,1
120gb ide hard drive
lg dvd r/w
500watts psu (athlon xp capable)

my problem starts when i bought an nvidia 6600gt agp card to update the fx 5500

drivers were installed perfectly
windows reboots and.............
NVIDIA SENTRY immediatly reports not enough power to the card lowering the clocks to protect the system.
this on idle whithout any stress.

checking hardware monitor in bios , indeed i had 11.52 volts at 12volt rail and whithout any load.
i install back the fx 5500 and i connect my multimeter on 12v rail molex running 3dmark 2001.
the multimeter reports 11.98 volts on full power.

what is going on? why my mainboard reports 11.50volts instaed of 11,98 v and i cannot install a more powerfull card?

changing mainboard to another one does not solve the problem .

any help would be appreciated

Watts=Amps*Volts

Suggested PSU for 6600GT is 200W.

Post a pic of the PSU label and we'll know if it's one known for problems. Decent 300W should be fine for this system. A cheapy 300W, sticker upgraded to 500W to shift them when ppl wanted bigger numbers might not be.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

You told us everything except PSU model.
And don’t believe the sticker just open it and inspect the insides.

6600GT is usually powered with external molex connector. Avoid combining it with DVD/HDD on one wire if that’s an option.

i cannot find a way to post the pic.
the specs are
500watt k.mex psu
30 amps 3.3 v
28 amps 5 volts
+12v1 17amps
+12v2 16 amps

i tried with a dedicated molex.
no change

It’s a regional Deer relabel or whatever, throw this junk away you are literally playing with fire.

Any half decent 400W FSP will solve the problem because your CPU is not 5V powered on that board.
