I was recently inspired by philscomputerlab and LGR to get into building some retro PCs. I'm currently working on a Win 98 SE build, however I've run into a snag during the "copying files for Windows" step and it errors out to:
"error loading vga.dvr" and then it asks me to remove any floppy disks and restart.
I've searched around, but I can't seem to find a definitive solution and hoping someone can help. Please be mindful with your questions as there is a lot I don't know and I'm not versed at all in command prompt. I've found some sparse directions that there may be a way to load a VGA driver via command prompt, but I don't know for sure. Here's what I'm running a long with a few things I've tried:
Mobo: ECS P4M800PRO-M
CPU: Intel Celeron D 326 2.53 GHz (maybe the CPU is too fast?)
RAM: Micron 512MB (2 x 256MB) DDR-400 (only using one module at the moment and running at 200MHz)
GPU: ATI Radeon X800 XL 256MB GDDR3 AGP (I read that the X800/X850 are compatible with Win 98)
Storage: I'm trying a Sandisk 60gb SSD via SATA to IDE bridge but I also have an IBM deskstar 27gb IDE HDD, which I haven't tried yet. I want to keep trying the SSD all the way through.
CD-ROM: Hitachi LG GCE-8400B IDE Optical Disk Drive (using Win 98 SE disc - not upgrade disc, but for PCs w/o Windows)
Floppy: Sony MPF920 (not using yet)
Sound Card: SB Audigy2 ZS (not using yet)
Things I've tried and other notes:
1) Completely disabled all other drives except for the CD-ROM and the Sandisk - the mobo was recognizing a floppy disk somewhere - this allowed the "copying files" step to go a little longer, but it still errored out to "error loading vga.drv."
2) Repartitioning the SSD using FDISK. Original DOS partition was for the full 60gb, but I re-partitioned to a 50/50 split, which still failed. I tried an 8% to 92% split so 5gb for the main DOS partition and 55gb for the extended partition. Copying files went a little longer, but it still errored to "error loading vga.drv"
3) I've tried connecting to the VGA on the board and it still errored to "error loading vga.drv"
4) I've tried F5 for safe mode, but it just defaults to command prompt and I'm not sure where to go from there.
5) I haven't seen any errors with the SSD during FDISK or scandisk during my installation attempts, I just keep getting "error loading vga.drv"
6) I do not have any monitors with S-Video. My only options are VGA and DVI.
I'm not really sure where to go from here. I also have a fully working Windows XP rig I can use for burning software or connecting my floppy disk drive to. Maybe I need to create an install disk and not use the CD? Anyhow, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
