Hey, pulled out my GA-5AA board to mess around with. Now it just halts after checking NVRAM..Update OK! on

WAIT...

Things I've tried:

  • Reset to BIOS defaults
  • Disabled Floppy/IDE drives
  • Swapped RAM
  • Swapped GPU's
  • Pulled all PCI cards
  • Flashed F6 bios (was F7b)
  • Underclocked CPU
  • Confirmed all jumpers/switch block was configured correctly
  • Disabled all caches
  • Waited at the boot screen for over an hour

I'm so confused. I don't remember this board not working when I put it away like a year or two ago.

I've had boards refuse to POST and or boot because of a bad IDE cable before. Did you do the BIOS flash with a floppy (IE can it boot from a floppy)? I've had boards that refused to POST/boot because an optical drive was failing. I've had boards refuse to POST because a drive cable was plugged into the board, but there was no power to the drive. To cut down on variables (if it were me) I would remove the board from the case and use one stick of RAM, a video card, keyboard and floppy drive. If that works, then I would try connecting a hard drive.

Using a CF-IDE adapter. Works with my P3B-f board. I flashed the BIOS with a programmer.

I've never tried my luck with CF-IDE adapters, but I've certainly read many threads where they have had various incompatibility issues. If it will boot from a floppy successfully, I would then try an IDE drive rather than the CF-IDE.

since boars is an early revision, try flash 1.0 bios release.

It does the same thing with no drives enabled and the CF-IDE card removed.

Someone with a similar problem found that the CMOS battery died and replacing it solved the issue. That would fit your situation where it worked when you last used it several years ago; maybe you will be as lucky?

Replaced the battery with a fresh one when I pulled it out.

Anyways, I put it back aside, I pulled my P3b-f out instead. Much less hassle.
