Guys, I know there is allot of talk about Sound card quality but Picture quality is just as important.
Which ISA video cards do you think provide the best picture quality and were the color, tint, contrast, etc can be adjusted ?

Back in 1993 I had a cheap oak video card and I hated it.
I later got a VLB SVGA Trident 9000 1mb video card and worked allot better.

But which ISA cards do you like ?

The one you can see for yourself as many have problems with LCD's. If you want a name, your best bet is SpeedStar64.

Does that use the S3 chip ?

No, Cirrus Logic 5434.

Nie tylko, jak widzicie, w tym trudność, że nie zdołacie wejść na moją górę, lecz i w tym, że ja do was cały zejść nie mogę, gdyż schodząc, gubię po drodze to, co miałem donieść.

I recall Cirrus Logic GD5420-based cards made by Kentech having pretty good image quality on LCD, without jailbars in 320x200 games, but those are not quite speed demons for the most stuff - vastly better than most Tridents/Oaks but falls behind ET4000 and later Cirrus chips :)

It seems the "CRT Terminator" thing is close...
also, it should be possible to make new ISA graphics cards with digital output built-in...

I am happy with the output and speed of my Orchid Kelvin 64 ISA, but prices tend towards silly on those now.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

SpeedStar64 and Nitro64 use the same chipset and I'd guess they are identical in quality and speed. Top of the line ISA cards. Not as good in DOS but the best in Windows is ATI Mach64 VRAM.

@Intel486dx33: You can't go wrong with any of these.

Choose one of these based on chipsets:

Cirrus Logic GD-5434/5430/5428/5426/5424
Tseng ET4000/w32i, w32, AX
S3 805i/801
WD90C31/WD90C30
ATI Mach64 DRAM/VRAM

The less parts are on the board, more integrated it is and in general it's also better quality.

Requests here!

I'd say that's true for everyone but Trident. Every single card I've had with a Trident chip has annoying vertical banding on the picture, not too visible on CRTs (but is if you look carefully with the brightness turned up) but stands out like a sore thumb on LCDs. My WD and S3 cards don't do it.

Before anyone asks - yes I've tried trimming the "phase" control on the monitor's picture controls, but it didn't help.
