Hi,

I downloaded DosBox 0.72 to play tetris deluxe, an old freeware game from 1993 I used to play on DOS 5.0 (details of where to get it below). I notice that while the game does work (certainly better than through Windows XP's command or cmd prompts), there are little pixel artifacts under the characters and elsewhere and the graphics don't look "clean" as a result. Is this a bug in DosBox perchance? (I've read through the readme.txt with DosBox).

Thanks in advance! (Btw - Tetris Deluxe is a great little game)

Details of my system:

Motherboard: Unknown: Dell Inspiron 5150
Processor type and speed: Pentium 4 3GHz)
Amount and type of RAM: 768MB
Video board w/ RAM amount and type: nVidia GeForce FX Go5200
Operating system: Windows XP SP2
Game name (and version, if applicable) Tetris Deluxe (ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/msdos/games/tetris/tetris-d.zip)

Reproducibility of problem: Always

Byrne - have you tried playing around with different output methods and scalers in DOSBox? Aspect?

Tries to switch to 350 lines textmode, this is not supported by dosbox
at the moment. Using the machine=ega it will work in the next release,
or use some current cvs build.

Hi,

thanks for your replies and for checking this out so quickly! 😀 I really appreciate it. I'll try the ega mode for now.

It's taken me a while to reply (!) but I tried out a CVS build (dosbox_12.03.2008.exe) on Windows with a dosbox.conf with

machine=ega

But still no joy - would I be correct in saying the EGA mode hasn't been implemented in the latest builds yet?

TIA!

Maybe I should qualify my answer a bit better - the game does run and at correct speed but there are a lot of artifacts in the game's picture (ie. random white / colored dots). I don't see these artifacts when running the game under MS Virtual PC 2007 with FreeDOS (though the game runs FAR too fast under that environment to be playable).

Didn't notice any artifacting. Does the game look at least different with
machine=ega than with =vga? (the bottom should be correct)

Maybe try a different cvs build, and post screenshots with explanations
of what is wrong.

Incidently, you could run a DOS slowdown utility within FreeDOS to slow the game down, or slow down Windows (and hence also slow down Virtual PC) with a utility like Throttle. But DOSBox is probably easier.
