Bought a sound card from a local store today, it’s a “Golden Sound GS-32 PCM Interface” and luckily it came sealed in its box so I had drivers and manuals. What I’m confused about is its sound compatibility?

I can’t find much about it on the internet, so I’m hoping someone here can help! It seems to only support general midi and ms-32, does that mean I have to pair it with another sound card? Can it do any sort of soundblaster emulation? I set my autoexec for a Soundblaster 16 just to check, and Doom acknowledges the general midi, but can’t playback any sounds (Epic Pinball crashes with any sound setting I choose.) Other than that issue, any sort of info about this card would help. Thanks 😀

Yes, that card is obviously intended to be used together with an SB-compatible card.

No mention about SB compatibility on the box, and no SB-compatible chips on the card...

How would I go about connecting the two?

GS-32 Line Out -> SB Line In

Would I have to add another blaster line to the autoexec?

You mean you already have "SET BLASTER=..." in AUTOEXEC.BAT ?
But how?
It doesn't make sense for the GS-32 software to add that line...

Maybe its drivers write additional parameter /P:330 to SET BLASTER?)))

I added that line manually just in case it supported a soundblaster. Doesn’t seem to do anything though.

Edit- I understand what you mean, I can just use the Blaster command for the soundblaster that does work and feed it through the Toptek card that has its own midi going on.

Hi. I would also check for resource conflicts. Gameport and MIDI port and IRQ, for example.

Currently, it seems gameport is OFF, but IRQ is 5 and MPU 401 is at 330.
That conflicts with most standard settings of a Sound Blaster compatible.

Edit: One of the cards should be reconfigured for IRQ 7 and MPU port 300h, maybe.
Both were alternate addresses for sound cards.
IRQ 7 was the old setting for Sound Blasters, while MPU port 300h was also used for General MIDI games if port 330h was unavailable.
Early MT-32 games by contrast do often expect MPU port 330h only.

Did it come with a driver disk?
Maybe try getting it play midi without the sb16 in the system.
What sb16 model? Makes a difference if it’s pnp or not.
But key is like mentioned above is to make sure none of resources conflict.

This GS-32 is similar to two other cards: the Dream PW-32 Pro and the PowerWave. The Midi-music-only functionality of such cards is comparable to the Roland SCC-1, but unlike the Roland they usually need a driver to initialize.
The PW-32 Pro/PowerWave cards have the common Dream-SA SAM 9233 synthesizer chip, whilst the GS-32 has the older but similar SAM 9203 chip.

What is Dream PW-32 PRO?
SC8500 sound card - what does it do?

Hello! I'm back, this time with a new question. So I got the card working, it's a midi music only card, and it does General Midi and apparently some sort of GS-32. One of the included driver applications is for setting reverb and chorus (GS-EFF.EXE). However, when I try to set either of them, I don't hear a difference even when both are set to 127. I don't know much about midi so I'm sure I've overlooked something. Is it something with General Midi? My tests have been with Doom and Monkey Island. Any thoughts?
