Here are my latest benchmarks with only 16mb of ram.
I am going to get another 16mb or ram for a total of 32mb and run the tests again.
Scores did go up a little since replacing the hard drive with CF card.
But it’s to quiet now. I miss the ticking sound of the hard dive so I might go back to a mechanical hard drive.

Recommend Serdashop's HDD Clicker. It's subtle, but just clicky/ticky enough for me.

Heh, if you want one like that, they usually come with 6* 5.25 bays (3 full height, 6 half height) with 2* 3.25 bays under. .. cases like that weigh a ton though and you need to find 36" to 40" drive cables.... Also can be a problem for PSUs, either for cable length, because it takes a "modern" AT format right at the top, or for fit if it takes an orginal AT shape PSU, same shape as in a 5170, which are even harder to find, especially with high output for a multi drive monster.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Yup, I'll second this. It's not exactly the same as an HDD, but close enough in my books.

Helping keep the 486 FREE of Viruses.
Something has been destroying my hard drives so I am on a mission to clean all my diskette and drives of Viruses.

McAfee was the Best Antivirus software of the 1990’s.
Maybe thats why Intel purchased the company.

In a lab we had a Novell server and MS-Windows server. We Created a shared drive on each computer and over the Network copy Viruses
Onto it. We had a server loaded with Nortons Antivirus and a McAfee Antivirus server.

We had a CD full of Viruses and over the Network we would copy the Viruses onto each computer to see which Antivirus software
Worked best.

McAfee was able to detect and quarantine all of the Viruses we had on that CD.
Over 3000 Viruses.

Nortons Antivirus did not do so good and many viruses got thru undetected.

Some of my favorite models were from Revell.
Before computers we had Model building class, wood shop, metal shop, and art classes in elementary school.
I think today it’s probably more like 3D imaging, 3D printers, Metal Printers, Robots, and CNC Machines.
And collaborating using VR Headsets and the MetaVerse.

Windows 95 ?……No Problemo

Guys, Today is “Its Beat up the 486 Friday.”

So today we will be reliving 1995 and Installing Windows 95 on a 486 from 1993
All my components are from 1993 except VLB video card is from 1994 and 8x CDROM is from 1997 I think.
I don’t have a working older CDROM drive so I used this one.

I NOT Only Selected Good Performance components from 1993/94 but components with drivers provided in Win3x and Win95
So this computer is EASY to install operating systems on.
Oh yeah, I also am using a 4gb CF card.

So I would say the Two components that Made a BIG difference in this computers performance is the 8x CDROM and CF card which are probably from around 1997

Also I have 16mb of RAM
Most 486 computers from 1995 era had 4mb or 8mb of RAM because RAM was Very expensive selling at about $100 per Megabyte.
So 4mb cost $400
8mb cost $800
And 16mb cost $1600

And 8x CDROM drive probably Cost about $100
And a 512mb CF card probably cost about $50 at launch

Anyways my 486 computer build probably would have cost about $3.500 to build back in 1994

So let’s see if it installs Windows 95.

Yes Windows 95 SR2 installed with NO Problems. Everything working out of the Box.
I did NOT have to install any additional drivers and Everything work with default settings.
And games played fine.

But $3,500 is ALLOT of MONEY for a computer back in 1994

It really was NOT worth having a 486 computer back in 1994 unless you used it everyday for Work and School and could write it off in your taxes.
Put that computer to work and have it make you MONEY $$$$$$$$$$$
Get a business license and write off your computers in tax deductions and expenses.

nice ! I've got 486dx66, 8Mb RAM here. Got Boot Manager with options to load into DOS, WIN95 and OS/2 WARP. But I didn't know I could install Office 97 to it 😀 How is it ? Running slow or ok-ish ? Min 8mb ram is not enough for it I recon.
