I already own the SC-55, SC-55ST, and SC-88Pro, but I've always been bothered by the SC-55ST not having any display panel, I really like having a large and bright channel spectrum display.

Now I have the opportunity to get a SC-50, according to the information on the Internet, it is a SC-55MKII with the MT-32 ROM removed, and some people also say that the wavetable data of the SC-50 has been weakened and the accuracy of the samples has been reduced relative to the MKII.

I would like to hear some advice, between the SC-55ST and the SC-50, without considering the MT-32 compatibility, which one should I keep?

Pentium MMX233, Zida TX98-3D, 64MB, Riva 128, Aztech Waverider Pro 32-3D, HardMPU-wt

The SC-55ST is the SC-55mkII in terms of patches and polyphony but has the original SC-55 DAC, and lacks a screen.
The SC-50 is the SC-55mkII in terms of polyphony and DAC but lacks the MT-32 tones.

Both have the same wave ROM except for the 1MB MT-32 tones that the SC-50 lacks. The wavetable data is unchanged in SC-55mkII vs SC-50, literally the difference is the MT-32 tones (which IMHO are overrated).

I would definitely say the SC-50 is a better product in each way minus the MT-32 tones - audio (18-bit audio, better DAC), visual (screen).
If the MT-32 tones become important, then a mkII is needed. The SC-50/55mkII are the best SC-55's that exist with screens though (IMHO).

SC-50 does have less samples compared to SC-55ST, being close in sound to the SC-7. It's especially evident in Descent level 1 soundtrack, because instead of using "proper" TR-808 cymbals, it uses standard SC-55 cymbals, albeit pitched down.

SC-55ST for sure, because, as you and me said earlier, SC-50 has less samples in the wavetable compared to SC-55ST.
