Has anyone got BlueByte's Setters working with VDMSound?

I'm running VDMSound 2.0.4.1 on WinXP, and Settlers always drops back to the desktop when an enemy building is captured. This happens even if the sound is turned off.

The game run fine without VDMSound on Win98.

Weird. Is this a protected-mode (DOS/4GW) game? If not, you might want to try DOSBox.

Yes, it’s my fault.

This has been covered before:

Apparently, there's still a mouse problem. Don't know if the newer mousefix program will work here...

I've not had a problem with the mouse. The game works fine until an enemy building is captured, then it drops back to the desktop.

I just tried running the game on WinXP without VDMSound, and I've discovered that I still have the same problem. The sound was turned off in the game. Could this be a graphics related problem? I have been running the game in SVGA mode, but I've also tried in VGA mode, and it still drops back to the desktop at that same point... when an enemy building is captured.

Update: Instead of clicking the .BAT icon, I decided run the .BAT file from the Command Prompt. This time, when an enemy building is captured... instead of dropping back to the desktop, the screen just fills with garbage (although the image is vaguely visible, as if the display mode changed). Pressing ALT-Return twice shows me the Command Prompt again. There are no error messages... the game had simply dropped back to the prompt.

Wow, dude. That's really weird. I'm not sure what to make of this. Have you made sure that you've got all the patches for the game? (I mean, this could be a problem that manifested itself in pre-NT systems as well.)

Yes, it’s my fault.

I looked around for a patch, and I didn't find one, but... I did find a French version of the game on a classic games web site. The game appeared to worked fine as before, so I loaded my saved game from the English version, an enemy building was captured.. and it didn't crash!

So, my problem is kinda solved... except that I have to play the game in French. 😒

It sounds like your game files may have become corrupted. Have you attempted to re-install with a good CD (or disks)?
