I finished my GPU cooler mod today.

I can't remember the original, as I've had an Intel cooler on here for a while, but it was a savage job, since I did it when I was 16-ish. I decided to stay simple, which was good, as I nailed it in the first try. Used long CD screws and nuts and a few mica washers to hold the brackets on. The fan clicked into place on top, once clocked properly.

I'm in the middle of gaming on it right now and it's fricking frosty, man! "Playing" Quake4 (1024x768-High) only yielding 20-25FPS, but slow frames means hot card, usually, right? Nope. Hitting the chill zone. Just what I was looking for. Unfortunately the 3.2 P4 I installed in here was kaput, so back on the 2.8.

That's a totally - well - cool mod! But is the heatsink held in place by the fan, which is mounted with 2 3D-printed "click-on" brackets? Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen? Or is there something I don't see and understand?

I don't think that FDM 3D printed brackets are mechanically strong or heat resistant enough for use on a CPU. Maybe an SLA resin print but not FDM.

Na, I use mainly ABS-like resin ... that wouldn't fly - a little strain and it'll break. Maybe using fiber injected filaments would do the job? idk

you can watch my twitch stream to see the intro and the diskmag (I had to run get bread out of the oven so ran the intro 🤣)

the stream doesnt do it justice (there is two different songs and 3 different logos than will be randomly selected).

the intro is really just designed to get everyones name printed so its just a fancy text writer.

You know, I was fearful of the thing breaking off or heating up/melting. BUT, I ran a few tests with a TEC and heated the thing with the fan off to probably OVER where I would expect to run (70-80°C) and it didn't sag or anything on the testboard I mounted the TEC to, to simulate mounting. They're ABS now, so I'm not worried about meltage. The original set didn't break the whole time I was experimenting (and they were PLA+), so they're pretty strong. I get a good view of the contact patch and it's WAY better than I had it all those years. The heatsink weighs significantly less, to0 at 14.1oz. The full Aluminum one was 13.8, so not much difference. The one I took off was 20oz and was a PROBLEM and NEVER got used. Pretty happy with how it's working. I thought this card was dead years ago and have been hoarding it, since it was the first video card I ever bought (new).

Recapped another sound card 😁. I'll install this on my 486 build.

are those red caps called "Würst" ? Just seing them a lot in DigiKeys and trying to understand if those are ok or not (I suspect they are not really from Germany despite their datasheet statements)

Well, this is the first time I heard the name Würst. These are ELNA Silmic II Purple Robe series, which are excellent choice for sound cards.

Yah ppl like that about a cardboard fan duct I made back in the day "OMG it's gonna catch FIRE" dude if fire happens to that, it's already freaking broke and on fire, not as a consequence of using cardboard, shit don't get THAT hot.

I think you mean Würth, that's a respectable company from Germany. They have all kinds of components, tools and what not. I think I had a red Würth cap when I was a kid, got it for free at some agricultural venue / fair.

They have caps though, not sure if they have their own plant, but they look cool on my BP6. 😁

A few days ago I found a somewhat strange monitor. It's a Digital PCXBV-SA, it's dated October 1995. But the cable (which I couldn't find) is detachable and the connector is 9 pins. Is it EGA? I doubt it's CGA because of the date. But in any case it would be a very, very late EGA ?!?!?. Unless the cable is an adapter or something like that.
Looking for some reference and I found that it seems to be a rebranded SAMSUNG CSQ4327, VGA
It powers up but doesn't show raster on the screen. I already gave it a good cleaning, there was a broken capacitor that corroded a part of the board, which I cleaned.

EDIT: Well, the input is three pins for RGB (go to a LM1203N chip) and two that seem to be sync (those 2 and the Green go to a SL506A chip), the other 4 go to GND. The SAMSUNG CSQ4327 data i found says it have sync-on-green.
EDIT: Nah, not EGA at all, it's VGA, I think just making a suitable cable will do the trick... if it works, or else I will need to spend some time bring him back to life

It is unusual for one to be made so late, but some of the earliest VGA monitors also only used 9-pin connectors.

It's possible that since it is a "Digital" brand, it may have been used for a workstation that used an older or non-standard 9-pin VGA connector.

Watched The Matrix with my 17 y.o. daughter. She has a very great taste in movies. A few weekends ago it was Fight Club. I've raised that kid well 😎
