I recently resurrected my dads old Compaq Deskpro and installed Windows 98 SE, completely fresh.

Unfortunately I'm having issue with the GPU, a Matrox G200 AGP, that crashes as soon as it tries to run in Direct3D mode, resulting in screwed up visuals and an illegal operation error, pointing towarsd the Kernel. It works fine in 2D mode, but as soon as any kind of 3D render call is maded, boom, crash. I've checked the devices in BIOS and cleared any potential IRQ conflicts, but no dice.

The driver version i'm using is 6.82.016 for Win 98.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Is this system Intel or AMD based? Be sure you've installed any chipset drivers.

Try an older driver. One of the older Powerdesk 6 series. The 5 series is fine too but prior to about 5.52 there won't be OpenGL support yet. Some drivers don't work well with AMD boards.

Remember this is a DirectX 5/6 chip. It will probably only run games from 1999 and older. Performance is a bit better than Voodoo1.

See if 3DMark99 works because that should run fine.

Sorry, it's Intel, a Pentium III system with a Slot 1 CPU to be more precise. The games I've tried running so far are Starfleet Academy from 1997, and Trespasser from 1998, and are probably the only old D3D games I have atm. Chipset drivers are installed.

I'll try older drivers, but I'll probably have to put that on hold as the system fan just gave up the ghost and the PSU fan doesn't seem far behind, so I need to get that looked at first. 🤔

I had a similar problem, and found that disabling onboard devices in the BIOS (like audio and USB) fixed the problem.
Another option is to open the Matrox display driver settings, and disable bus mastering. But in that case I found that it disabled OpenGL acceleration and lowered D3D performance.

Well i got it working, two things happened so i don't know which did it. But I did install version 5 drivers, and I also scored a Compaq Presario 1725 monitor, which has proper driver support unlike the 15" Apple monitor i was using.

Either, way, its turning into a good and proper Win 98 setup, and it works. 😀

Same problem here. After installing older everything went OK.

Well... I miss 80/90s ... End of story
