Hi! I have a DOS laptop at my mother's house, and I'm supposed to head there for Christmas. 😀 The laptop has no hard drive, so I have to simulate some using two zip disks, two large RAM drives and a network with a Win98SE system. I have two hard drives I can install on it but need a connector for them. Until then, I'm using a floppy to start the system up and am using QEMM for memory. Optimize and its functionality can't fit on the floppy, so I have to optimize its memory layout manually. I believe I'm using the frame Stealth mode but don't know how to get DOS-Up to load parts of DOS high. How do I write its data file?

Have you tried a DMF formatted floppy?

1.72mb might be able to fit Optimize?

I thank you. I have 2M, and it can do the job. Better yet, it can load on boot. What happens after I load the driver? What happens to the memory used by the driver at start-up?

I am not sure how that would work...

If it were me, I would indeed, manually optimize it.

The devil is in the details though, and would require you to examine your upper memory area to know where all your option roms are, require you to trial and error if the STEALTH option works with your drivers, which drivers you are using, if you are using EMS or not, and if you want to try scanning for / using the TEST option to try to use FF-byte sections of the system and video bios for use as UMBs...

Do you feel like going down this rabbit hole?

Well...I already optimized its memory layout a long time ago but just want to optimize it a little further. Right now, I want to load parts of DOS high, use more efficient drivers and shrink down the size of the network drivers by switching to Easy-Net.

If you feel up to it, give me the MSD memory browser with no managers loaded, and you config.sys and autoexec.bat.

I'll have a look and see if /where we might squeeze harder.

Well...the laptop is at my mother's house, and I'm not there right now, but I'm supposed to be going there for Christmas. BTW, would you take the output from the "MEM/D" command?

Sure. /C would also be useful.

I'm at my mother's house right now, but I have two problems: 1. One of the Zip drives I received here didn't work: it had two female connections on the back: it needed a male connector, and 2. the laptop's floppy drive stopped working. 🙁

That sounds like a zip 100 plus.

It's both lpt and scsi. It does NOT do lpt passthru.

Yes, but the lpt connection I have didn't plug into it at all.

I have an internal IDE Zip drive here, but my mother discouraged me from using it, stating that, if I break it, I'd be out of a Win98SE tower. BTW, a few minutes ago, a flash drive broke on me. 🙁 I should've copied the files off it when I had the chance. 🙁

You seem to be having a rash of misfortune.

Take a nap, and come back to it later.
