Thinking back on the original Doom 3 release, I was always disappointed by the weapons compared to the original Doom and Doom 2. The Doom 3 weapons felt floaty to use with poor feedback in the game perspective and the sounds they made never felt very satisfying.

Besides the gameplay, the lack of satisfaction at actually firing a weapon in this game really took a lot of the enjoyment out of it.

Did any of you feel this way?

Yeah, they still feel weird to me, especially the shotgun. I think EAX 4.0 makes them slightly punchier in some areas, but it can't help that much if the base sound effect is lackluster.

Somehow, Doom 1 & 2 had more satisfying weapon sounds than a sequel released 10 years later.

I was very much spoiled by the likes of Unreal Tournament classic, UT 2004 and UT 3. All of the weapons in those games felt perfect. I never felt that Doom 3 lived up to he hype. And I did manage to play through it to the end, but it was a real struggle with little payoff for the effort.

The plasma rifle was a bit more satisfying but everything else kind of sucked. Especially the grenades.

The original Doom shotgun is one of the most satisfying weapons in any FPS.

Wolfenstein 3D had better weapons than Doom 3 😸

But yeah everything was slow and bulky. How can you so mess up a shotgun and a chaingun.

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.

I never had any strong feelings about the weapons in Doom 3 in my recent repeated play throughs, but I've never played the earlier Doom games, so I've no basis for comparison there. IMO Doom3 is a pretty good game, but Resurrection of Evil bored me, and I only made it about half way through and quit, as I found the boss fights to be both difficult, and boring. But it does have a pretty good double barrel shotgun (the Grabber is pretty disappointing).

That's how I felt about Doom 4 as well. It seemed to be successful on its own, but it doesn't feel anything like the original Doom. I guess I should have expected that. Id Software sequels never seem to have any consistency; Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Quake 4, Doom 1/2, Doom 3, Doom 4, Heretic, Heretic 2, Hexen, etc.

I had similar feelings about Quake 2. I loved Quake 1 and had plenty of jump scares while playing it. But Quake 2 felt wide open and boring. I do know that Quake 2 was never intended to be the sequel, but this kind of uncomfortable change feels like the norm rather than the exception for this company.

My favorite games are all the earliest ones; Doom 1/2, Heretic, and Quake. I never enjoyed any of the sequels. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was also good, but it wasn't ever trying to be a direct sequel to Wolfenstein.

RtCW is one of best FPS there is and with best weapons selection even without shotgun.

DOOM / DOOM 2 had badass weapons, fast paced gameplay, interesting level design, hordes of enemies, and fantastic music. DOOM 3 was an OK game relative to other shooters but sucked when compared to the proper DOOMs.

I was largely left out of the Doom hype of the 90s. Somehow that game just happened to avoid me. And because of this, I didn't go in with all too high expectations. But out of the 3 FPS graphics powerhouses of the year (Far Cry and Half-Life 2 were the other two), that one had the highest system requirements and imho aside of lighting, the least impressive graphics and game play.

I think id reborn or had a renaissance in the early 2010s. I liked Rage, Wolfenstein: The New Order and Old Blood, Doom 2016... then they dropped the ball again.

But I also love Quake 2 and 4.

I found it strange, and the shotgun wasn't as expected.
Also the flashlight had to be held and not attached to weapon, but was fixed later.

I loved it and I'm still liking it. Also Resurrection of evil wasn't as nice but still not disappointing.

I wish there were more mods like HL2 or Portal. I guess it isn't as easy to create such complex mods.

I purchased a 9600 just to play it.

The shotgun was the most disappointing weapon for me, not being like the classic one and requiring a very close range to be effective.

As for other games based on id Software's IP, I did enjoy them but won't be replaying DOOM Eternal anytime soon because of its extremely aggressive combat system that previous ones didn't have.

I felt this was too. After all the hype, I was not impressed by the graphics at all. Everything was clostraphobic and boring. I actually got very fed up by the later levels since they all started to look the same to me. I also got lost in the corridors at one point because of an the sameness. It just wasn't very fun.

I feel like a lot of reviewers over hype mainstream titles from big publishers unnecessarily. Yeah, it is "Doom 3," but they can still be honest and critical about its shortcomings.

I disagree with the flashlight "Fix"; IMO the game is meant for you to have to sometimes choose between your weapon and your flashlight.

Except that it didn't really add to the atmosphere at all for me. It was just an annoying inconvenience when I had to choose between shooting things (fun) in the dark (not so fun) and seeing where I'm going. Inconvenience is not a substitute for immersion. Not that shooting things was very satisfying either.
