This is a disappointment for me, I was consifering it so far best LCD for retro gaming, because of various inputs (component, s-video, yppbr ...)

Oh no, I get the feeling. That Dell 2408 probably has the same elements that the frameskipping Dell 2007 has. What will make things worse now is that if you look at 70Hz games closely, you can see that the display also doesn't have vsync locking in it, but will tear to do the update in 60 Hz, resulting in visible seams on screen.

I tested my 204B and it frameskips at 70hz. It's easy to see on both the numbers and animation. The numbers cycle through a blank on 70hz, on 60hz they all flash consistently. Animation at 60hz is noticeably smoother.

Before there were dedicated testers, I used Pro Pinball (The Web, Timeshock!, etc) and it is very easy to see the frameskip in the motion of the pinball. 60hz is smooth, 70hz the ball appears to jump around.

This monitor frameskips on both the VGA and DVI inputs for me. Manufacture date for mine is April 2006.

That is why I posted a label, since there are the two "actual" model numbers on it that reflect more about what the electronics inside actually are. What do yours say ?

The only differences are mine is manufactured in Mexico and my model number is LS20BRDBBV/XAA. Maybe the US market version was different for some reason.

That could possibly be... Mine definitely wasn't skipping frames, and it had a CRT right next to it as a reference. It only exhibits motion blur but no kind of stutter one gets from skipped frames.

Interesting. I love this monitor, but the frameskip is a bummer. The service manual only mentions one panel part number (BN07-00249A) and one main board (BN41-00620F). Maybe we have different revisions of the main board?

What does your service menu say for the version?

Mine is definitely different :

I'm not sure what is on the inside, I'm not really in the position to go inside it again to take a look for the time being.

Thanks for checking. Looks newer? -1003 vs -1000. I might see if I can find a mainboard somewhere.

Thanks Tiido. Very helpful. I found a firmware dump (M-BR20B9BGa -1001 2007.09.25) on a Russian language monitor repair forum. I'm trying to get access to a -1007 version. Apparently the firmware is held in a pm25lv010 chip on the board and is straightforward to dump/flash with a programmer. All the versions of the board I've found all contain the same gm5766-LF AA, so it appears the main scaler/display driver hardware on the board is the same, the firmware possibly containing the difference in behavior. I might crack mine open, snap some pics, dump the firmware, and flash the one I found.

Welp, I definitely have an earlier revision of the main board! Doubt the firmware I found will work on this.

Panel looks identical to yours.

Now, I'll just need to locate a newer main board.

So these monitors are definitely not built equal, even if label on the back says the same model numbers...

Display name: Compaq WF1907v
Year: 2008? (see side notes below)
Results: OK
Display native resolution: 1440x900

Input tested: VGA D-SUB (this model doesn't have any other video input ports)

Side notes:

  • The WF1907v is apparently a VGA-only version of the regular WF1907, the specs of which can be found here.
  • The WF1907 was apparently announced at CES in 2008. I'm not sure if the WF1907v variant also came out in the same year.
  • According to the specs of the WF1907, that model also supports 75Hz for some resolutions. Not sure if that's also without frame-skipping. Also not sure if this also applies to the VGA-only `v` variant.

If I remember correctly, for a time it was common to release TFT monitors in cheaper price ranges with only VGA inputs and without DVI or HDMI. I believe this was done to circumvent an import tax that the EU was levying on TVs, or anything that could be deemed a TV.

Bought a "for parts" Samsung 204B on ebay for cheap. Seller said it wouldn't turn on. They likely never recapped the power supply which was the first thing I had to do with my 204b to get it to work. It has a manufacture date of January 2007. So, I hoped it would have the newer revision mainboard.

Sure enough, it did!

I dropped it into my monitor, and initially it did not work. It would display with a red hue and the OSD would not function. Fortunately there are some old posts on badcaps.net that mention clearing the EEPROM which stores the settings. It involves shorting pin 5 and 6 on the A81SC EEPROM.

I cleared the EEPROM, and it works!

There is likely another EEPROM that stores the hour/change data, but I just reset those within the service menu. While I have this monitor cracked open, I ordered some new SMD caps to replace the likely aging ones on the mainboard. I'll replace those, and then will confirm I'm not getting any frameskip.
