Hi all,
I spent countless hours trying to solve this with no success, so I would be really grateful if any of you experts here would help me out.
I just don’t get any sound during the intro of the game Comer (game from 1998) on my TP-Laptop with Win98SE (specs below), Video of intro however works fine. I know the intro has sound because when I doubleclick media player plays the intro with sound. So my sound obviously works and I never had any sound issues with other games so far. Also important: During the game itself (after intro has finished and game starts), I do hear sound effects.
Before I list specs, one more piece of info that might be important: the game CD also includes the codec-bundle iv5play.exe. The game requests to install it because according to the game prompt indeo (video) codec 4.x is required. The bundle also contains Indeo audio decoder (2.5.1 I guess), indeo video codec 3.2, indeo video code 5.0, Indeo video 5.06 DirectShowFilter, but it is not clear whether this audio decoder is needed or not because the game readme requirements about sound only says: ‚Windows compatible sound card, WAVE AUDIO PROPERLY SET (what does that even mean?). No MIDI requirement’. So I dont know whether indeo audio decoder 2.5.1 is needed or not. Of course I installed iv5play.exe, but still no sound/sound effects during the intro, only during the game itself.
System:
Thinkpad 600x - Type 2645
NeoMagic MagicMedia256ZX
Crystal Sound Fusion(tm) Game Device, Crystal SoundFusion(tm) Joystick, Crystal SoundFusion(tm) PCI Audio Accelator, Crystal SoundFusion(tm) Virtual MPU-401
Windows 98SE
Also weird: BEFORE installing iv5play.exe, when starting the game, the intro does not work at all (no video and no sound, message: vids:IV41 is missing).
AFTER installing iv5play.exe, video works, but still no sound 🙁 Last but not least: Before installing iv5.play.exe, Windows\System\ alsready contains Indeo-dlls: lac25_32.ax, Ir32_32.dll,
Ir41_32.ax, Ir41_qc.dll, Ir41_qcx_dll, Ir50_32.dll, Ir50qc.dll, Ir50qcx.dll. This matches Wikipedia which says that Windows98SE comes with all indeo codecs. But as mentioned, video does not work (I tried regsvr32 Ir41_32.ax with some success message, but still no video), video only works after having installed iv5play.exe
My friend has the very similar Thinkpad 600e and for him, sound in intro works fine without any manual config required. According to his device manager, he has a different sound-hardware(Crystal PnP Audio System) with more entries (eg. Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC) - could that make the difference?
Does anybody have an idea what I could to to make it work? Again, I really, really would appreciate help.
Regards
Mike
PS: I also have a Thinkpad R52 with WindowsXP where I have the same sound problem, even though hardware is totally different.
