In the process of printing a simple bracket to mount an SD to IDE adapter in the only 3.5 bay the Compaq iPAQ PC has that I'm working on.

This is the whole reason I wanted a 3D printer, for special projects. 😀

Any news? Power zone can either be worth the price or just whatever works.
It's just more work and more time.

Bah, no. I was trying to do fun retro stuff when that interrupted, now car stuff interrupted that, with house stuff also coming up, and necessitating trying to sort out financial stuff, then I've got a bad flu or something, so nested 5 emergent situations deep 🙁

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Got to my first stable version with .Net project!

GitHub: https://github.com/ByteAether/Ulid
Announcement blog post: https://byteaether.github.io/2025/announcing- … n-applications/

Along the way, i had to learn a lot of new things that i had never touched before. And all of it is mostly *not* related to the functionality of the package itself. New stuff for me:
* The whole GitHub Actions DevOps world. (I'm not a DevOps person at all)
* Eleventy static page generator for GitHub Pages. (+ GitHub Actions related to that!)
* Packing a project into a NuGet Package with all the "metadata" necessary.
* All the "paperwork" stuff for open source projects, from readme files and licenses to issue templates.

Has been fun and really happy to give something back. 😀

Released a second post to my blog that shares what the whole ULID-thingy is about:

Didn't get to it today specifically, but I started looking at smartphones and have no idea what to buy. My stupid bank dropped Android 7 support in its app last month, so I guess I'll need a new device to run it on, old version will probably stop working at some point. Why do you need a stupid smartphone to access the stupid website? What was wrong with browser certificate?

I'm looking at them and TBH don't like any of them. Either they're too big or have screen issues or are non-rootable or are too expensive or the brand is suspicious or they don't have anything visible for notifications when the phone is in standby (what happened to notification LED?) and...I don't know. I'm tired and sick of technology (and people).

Gah, I hate modern smartphones. They all have almost non-existing bezels and the stupid selfie camera drilled into top of the screen. I have less than zero need for the selfie camera... I'm not sure Sony is still to be trusted with their screens going bonkers after few short years in their mid-range offerings from few years ago and removal of notification LED.

Rootable is biggest bane if we have to repair any. Samsung do check for it during the service and void the service regardless of the warranty or not.

Iphone mini if you are after small one. And easy to use as you sounded like that way. Do not buy any low end phones, they crumble to bits and break with use. Mother had low end phone given to her from Bell and lost her precious photos due to failing phone and was dropped often.

Huawei always have battery issues through aging, and not easy to get parts for. Same with Sony too and any phones that we never heard of.

We prefer phones that have long time parts supply. That's Samsung and Apple.

There is very rare reasons to need a jailbreak or rootable mainly for the side loading software. I know this is stupid but can you do without that?

Cheers,

Great Northern aka Canada.

Iv been super happy with even low-end Motorola G series phones. I'm using a $45 Motorola G stylus 2023?? That's so far survived a lot of abuse. The screen is cracked to heck but it doesn't malfunction at all, and is plenty fast. My previous G7 Power still works fine, but the screen is 99% cracks and missing 10% of the glass. It's stuck on Android 10 officially, but the battery still lasts 2 days of heavy use. I should order a new screen for that, Android 10 isn't that ancient yet right?

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

Judging by Samsung Galaxy A15 5G at work, I think could get used to something bigger (and heavier). Currently have a Sony Xperia E3, it passed 10th year mark last year. It's still holding up.

I was looking at Sony among others, but I've read about OLED screens, which are prevalent today and PWM flickering. I'm worried it might effect me and it seems popular mainstream models have it bad along with Sony, even though Xperia 5 V seems OKish otherwise, if not a bit expensive. Besides worse viewing angles being noted in review, I've read an anecdote about white not being pure white even when being looked at straight and being more prone to static imagery leaving imprints on it.

I notice only other brands that dare to deviate from the established norms (size, thin bezels...) are some random Chinese ones. Ever heard of Unihertz?

I thought all things considered, compromises being unavoidable, maybe I should focus on the better screen, considering the time I spent reading on it. So I found Motorola Edge 50 Pro, but still can't decide whether to go for it or not.

Rooting may not bring as many possibilities as it does with older Android versions and devices, but it comes with sense of freedom that just isn't there with locked down device. Though I realize big corps are ruining that aspect. I actually unlocked the bootloader of my Xperia E3 soon after I bought it new, knowing full well warranty will go kaput (it never needed any servicing). It was used to more efficiently manage limited storage space, moving apps to system partition, avoiding having two versions on /system and /data, installing some mods to extend original Android 4.4.4 and later replacing it with LineageOS 14.1.

I also remember trying Firefox OS on this device years ago.

iOS really isn't for me, so Apple is out of the question.

Printing more cases to protect my growing old processors collection. I really like these. Quick prints and they work well. 😀

I finally swapped my new upgrade parts into my old case and put the old hardware in a smaller case. I also tried to remount my CPU heatsink because it felt unusually cold compared to software temperature readings, but it was mounted correctly with a good amount of paste. I've seen a peak of 72°C in applications that hammer a few threads (my benchmarks are the MAME ROM starsldr and LTspice with a basic LTC3261 test circuit), but it only hits 60°C in video rendering.

Final specs:
CPU: Ryzen 7 9700X
CPU cooler: Thermalright Assassin X120 Refined
MB: MSI Pro X870-P WiFi
RAM: 64GB DDR5-5600
SSD: 2TB WD SN850X
HDD: 8TB WD WD80EAAZ-00BXBB0 (I should get a faster one)
PSU: FSP Hydro GE 650W
Case: Corsair 200R (still with extra series resistors added onto the front LEDs, and I should get taller feet so the power supply gets more air)

The Silverstone PS13 case I bought for the old parts is difficult to work in because it's so small. I got everything to fit, but cable management doesn't exist. All of the cables ended up in a huge bundle directly in front of the included front fan (which also seems weak for the amount of noise it makes), so I moved the fan to the back.

I also learned that the Linux version of VirtualBox is completely broken. It gives an out-of-memory error, no matter how much RAM you have and how little RAM is allocated to the VM (I went down to 128MB on a system with 56GB available).
