I've played a bit with it in emulators, Steem v3.2 (Win XP) and NosSTalgia (Mac OS X 10.4)..

What I've noticed is that it does support the alternate CGA palettes, for example.
Playing those obscure 1981-1987 adventure games on PC must have been fun with Ditto.
Because they weren't that speed sensitive, I mean.

And that's really the main problem, lack of performance.
On a fast Atari ST with 16 MHz or with an processor upgrade (68010 or higher),
PC-Ditto was like an ordinary XT, maybe. Or on par with a Sanyo MBC-555, at least. 😀

If MS-DOS 5 causes trouble, you could try DR DOS 5 as an alternative.
It's about same age and like MS-DOS/PC-DOS 5 it can use UMBs and HMA, if available.

Btw, I noticed you were using GEM for testing.
That's a good choice, I have the disk set for PC1512 here which has it, along with DOS+.

What I mean to say is, however, that GEM is backwards compatible to old applications.
So you can use the classic, unrestricted GEM Desktop 1.x on later GEM versions.

You can also use, say, GEM applications from Siemens PCD or DEC Rainbow.
Modern applications do run on GEM 3 and FreeGEM/OpenGEM, I think.
