I've been watching the development of this with interest because I'm a huge fan of the original. I was expecting it to be a total disaster but the demo is OK...ish. The hero in the demo isn't the hero we'll get in the full game thankfully, and hopefully it's a different voice actor too because he was pretty annoying. The NPC voice actors were OK though so that's something. The character animation was too slow and I wish there was a 'classic combat' option - the combat in the original was great.

Overall it has some promise but I'll reserve my judgement until I see the full game - mostly it just made me want to play the original again. I've never been able to explain my obsession with the original (and Gothic II), there's just some magic in them, and I fear that it's impossible to recreate it. In saying that 'The Chronicles Of Myrtana: Archolos' did it, so you never know your luck.

I'm loving the atmosphere of the game. Taking a dip in the water next to the waterfall is quite beautiful. The water effects are well done. I do like the seamless entry into the mine without loading screens. I think this game has good bones and I agree, we'll just have to see how it fleshes out. I'm one who enjoyed Gothic 3 and Ultima 9 which were mostly disliked by their respective series fans. I just approached them as standalone games and that made it much more enjoyable without expectations.

I loved Gothic 3 too and you're right, I just need to resist the urge to compare this new game to the original because it's never going to be 1:1. As much as I'd like a remake that was an exact copy of the original in a new fancy engine, no dev in their right mind would do that.

BTW the GOG version seemed to work a bit better than the Steam one, for me anyway. The GOG version allowed me to change the max refresh rate and the 'disable object outlines' option worked in the GOG version, but not Steam.

From my observation the demo is still kinda jank, but that's very in spirit with Gothic games.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.
