It was composed with MIDI, but for some reason I thought I had read it was original composed for the XG format.

Final Fantasy VII is oft-cited as being one of the few gaming titles to offer XG support. Few know or realize that SquareSoft had little to do with the XG arrangements though - Yamaha did it all in-house. In my opinion, SquareSoft's own SoundFont-based "conversion" attempt is more faithful to the PSX soundtrack, despite some dissimilarities.

I like Heretic music, heard through the SC-55.

Both Warcraft and Warcraft II and Settlers II.

Descent sounds nice through the SC-55.

And most Sierra games (they are in MIDI format right? 😦 ) - King's Quest V, Conquests of the Longbow, etc.

I've already mentioned this in the few other threads, but the music for U.S. Navy Fighters not only is awesome, it sets excellent mood for the game and its setting. It also sounds good across all hardware (FM based, and sound font based alike).

Also few honorale mentions that I think weren't listed already: Terminal Velocity, TFX (by Barry Leitch), Eurofighter 2000 (not as good as TFX but still atmospheric).

Wow. Nice to read that I’m not the only one voting Quest for Glory 4 as absolute atmospheric number one here using soundcanvas 😀 there is even a page were you can listen all tracks from a real orchestra. Gabriel Knight comes 3rd I would say.

In general looking back I’m / was someone who appreciated games with good AND a lot of midi music most.
Sierra started slowly but raised. They had imho always great title themes on MT32 but during the games often not too much of music (LSL2, QfG1+2, SQ3 etc). With VGA versions all increased further (Eco Quest up to PQ4). Exception: LSL3 on MT32 is also very high on my scorecard - number 2 to be precise.
All that was the reason I guess why I was never so much into monkey island 1 nor indy3 as they were quite silent in these regards (except for the brilliant title theme)

Yes for more powerful themes I also can sign for doom 1&2 or Dune2

ROTT is up there. Probably the best soundtrack of any apogee game period

Nah for me it's Raptor. Sometimes I play that game just for the music.

Doom of course.
Decent, I don't even like the game but music is awesome.

These are all games where I like the music no matter which device. Games like Warcraft 2, Simcity 2000 really showcase MIDI and midi devices but I'd never listen to them outside of the game unlike the others

Stonekeep has some very nice MIDI tracks. It's also underrated as a game, in my view.

Here's a recording made on my SC-155. It certainly has that "creepy ruined castle" vibe.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Core 2 Duo E8600 / Foxconn P35AX-S / X800 / Audigy2 ZS
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

There are a lot of really nice MIDI tracks. Dune 2 comes to mind but also the music from Lollipop (either FM or MT-32) is great.
As for Sierra adventures, I think my all-time favourite music score is from King's Quest VI.

Akumajō Dracula on the x68000 already got mentioned but Square resort is another x68000 game with a well composed soundtrack.

Dark sun shattered lands on PC , love the intro and combat music , makes you really fell like you've fallen into an adventure , sewers music has a really good tune.

I'm suprised no ones mention A-10 tank killer , that game has kickass menu music making good use of that bottle blow sound.

Tex murphy under a killing moon had a pretty chill jazzy soundtrack that complimented the game well.

Could have also sworn callahans crosstime saloon had a pretty decent soundtrack.

And I think veil of darkness was pretty alright too.

And laser squads another one thats solid but the amiga version has that bitchin intro with vocalisation that the pc version lacks , though the pc version looks way better with vga.
