I tried to upgrade my 2168 from 128K to 256K. Got a 32KiB 20ns TAG and four 32KiB 25ns chip 28 PIN dips. Also reset jumpers J16/J17 according to documentation

And the machine won't POST. After investigation, it seems that despite its name, the CY7C199-20PC TAG I got has an access time of 10ns instead of 20ns. I wonder if that could be the cause of the failure. Anybody has succesffully upgraded the L2 cache of a IBM PS/1 TYPE 2133, 2155, 2168?

The faster asynchronous ram can't fail in place of slower chips.
The shorter access time only means the valid data will be guaranteed to be found on data pins earlier than with slower chip, it doesn't mean it will disappear sooner.

I'd worry more about new 32KB chips. They don't look particularly authentic - the marking style is different, and they all have the same date code.
If you have a TL866 or alternative - test those chips first. It's quite possible those are 8KB chips sanded and relabeled.
I have a mobo with 8KB chips relabeled as 32KB ones. And it was all soldered in from the factory: 486 replacing fake L2 cache chips

If you have a TL866

I don't but since I will have to use a patched BIOS to run a DX4ODPR100 I think it may be worth the investment. I am starting from zero in this domain, can you tell me if this is the real deal? Looks like the TL866II supports the M27C1001 but I don't see the mt5c6408 in there, can you confirm I will be able to test the SRAM chips with it.

What would be the setting to use to test my SRAM? I found this thread but not the same chips.

TL866II is an obsolete model. Better off look for its replacement - XGecu T48.

Yeah, the TL866II is an old model, and XGecu T48 is the next generation, even marked as "XGecu T48 (TL866-3G)" (i.e. the 3rd generation) in the Xgpro software.

You don't need to match the exact IC model. All these SRAM are pin-compatible, so you should select the standard 61256 SRAM to test it as 32KB chips, or 6164 to test as 8KB.

Your TAG chip isn´t inserted correctly, several pins are hanging outside the socket!

good eye, yea the legs are out
also having different chip brand i wonder if that is a problem too because even the tag is different than the rest

This is both utterly embarrassing and a good reminder of how error prone operating on these machines used to be. I adjusted the TAG chip as `majestyk` suggested.

And it worked right away.

I think I am a strong Golden Facepalm Award 2025 contender at this point.

Thank you all for sharing your expertise on the matter. I am one step closer to being done with my max upgrade restoration project 😀 !

Good eye majestyk ! Glad you got it working fabiensanglard ! We all make mistakes, I choose not to post mine 😉
