The games getting a source code release are Command & Conquer (Tiberian Dawn), Red Alert, C&C Renegade, and C&C Generals and Zero Hour. They're being released under the GPL license, meaning folks can mix, match, and redistribute them to their hearts' content without EA lawyers smashing down the door.

From what I heard from the C&C community folks, this is the entire source code for the respective games, unlike the previous release for the C&C Remastered Collection, which omitted everything not related to game mechanics. Apparently, in the present case you can compile the exact binaries from C&C95/Gold and Red Alert, provided you can piece together the dependencies used back then.

The Renegade source code release should be hugely beneficial for the community projects based on the game, such as Red Alert: A Path Beyond.

As for Generals, the community has been trying to rewrite the engine for some time, but the project has not gone very far IIRC. I'd love to see a fully GPL'd stand-alone RTS based on the engine.
