The infamous NDIS.sys. Well, there's NVIDIA's onboard Ethernet plus VMware and VirtualBox's virtual adapters, VirtualBox being installed most recently, August 2023.

If I recall correctly, the old Linksys WRT54GL router died in February 2024 (power surge), I used it to connect this computer to home's WiFi setup by the modem (because no cables installed in this house). PC was connected to the old router with a cable, I started using smartphone's USB tethering when router was no longer usable. USB tethering is always disabled and phone disconnected before shutting down computer or putting in to sleep. I wonder if combination of software on PC doesn't like nothing being plugged to the RJ-45 port.

No idea why it says unable to load image \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\nvmf6264.sys.

This is indeed onboard network interface's driver. Maybe that theory I assumed holds water.

You can try looking for an updated driver for your nVidia Ethernet controller, but if you are not currently using it, consider simply disabling it in the device manager, or in the BIOS.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! This was actually the first time I ever ran WinDbg, though I successfully used OllyDbg in the past, mostly for patching old games.

I believe this is the most updated driver. It's such a subtle change, going from using onboard Ethernet to not using it, I'd think of everything else first.

Tried to make work my BT headphones with an old Asus laptop from 2015, W10.
Pairing was slow, connecting was once every 10 tries and sound choppy.

Probably I need to upgrade the wifi/bt card or just disable the bt and use a usb adapter.

Frustrating.

Trying to design the filesystem layout for our new super computer / high performance computing facility.

Our current legacy system has three main areas:

- Personal home directory
- Personal directory on the parallel filestore
- Shared group directory on the parallel filestore

I've run the reports and the use of the parallel filestore is split almost 50/50 between data held in personal directories and data held by shared project groups. Since the pre-requisite to access the facility is that you must be a member of a project group (in order that any research conducted there is not abandoned when a single user leaves), I'm questioning why the design decision was taken by my predecessors to allow users to work and store data in personal directories and never have it accessible to the rest of the group.

At the moment I'm leaning towards removal of the personal area on the parallel filestore in the new platform, which would ensure that all work, code, scripts and data generated by that facility ends up in a shared group area, which will always have a minimum of 2 members.

Orphaned code and data is a real problem with the regular turnover of postgrads and research assistants on short contracts.

I thought I would take a day off to relax and catch up on sleep, but that didn't happen. My job is really crazy right now, and I don't want to look at anything involving electronics when I'm not at work. I don't even want to read about PC hardware. I have been wondering if Linux properly supports low-power idle states on my Ryzen 9700X, though.

A few days ago, I got this weird phishing-looking email telling me that I need to buy a new computer before Windows 10 support ends. I found a YouTube video talking about the email like it was real, but it could still be some weird phishing campaign.

Then I started thinking about getting my old desktop on Windows 11 (to screw around and eventually give it to someone who has an unsupported CPU - fuck the environment). I want to do a full reinstall on it when I finally do the downgrade, so I started by jumping through hoops to get Office downloaded. Signing into my Microsoft account doesn't give me the option to do anything except sign up for a Microsoft 365 subscription, so the instructions here are wrong. Eventually, I found a forum post that had a link to a Microsoft support page for the Office offline installer. That support page has a Download button, which then asks me to sign in again. After signing in, I'm taken to a page that says that there are no subscriptions (no shit, Sherlock). There's a button to take you back to the main subscription page for your Microsoft account, which is actually where the download links are. I don't know if those installers are time-sensitive (meaning that they stop working after a while so you have to download them again), so I guess I'll find out. My laptop has a different version of Office, and I would also like to have an offline installer downloaded for it (and just let it download months or years of updates if I actually need to reinstall) before Microsoft fully gives in to the "own nothing and be happy" bullshit (forcing poor people to pay a subscription to one of the few trillion-dollar corporations in the world who got there by selling perpetual software licenses - then you pay more to get an ad-free experience that eventually becomes "ad-reduced" and even more expensive).

Does the new set of system requirements for OEMs mean that I won't be able to do a fresh install on an 8th-gen Intel system?

I've been with messing with terminal on the new Unihertz phone. The OS has one nasty property that it goes out of its way to kill apps after the phone's locked. And there's no way to turn it off! Bleh! You know what, all smartphone manufacturers can go fuck themselves. Not a single normal model out there.

BTW, anyone knows the sound when Windows bluescreens while listening to music? I had to temporarily re-enable problematic network adapter, wanted to try something with old Creative's junk that I still have installed, which is apparently tied to that network adapter (activation shaeningans, maybe just a MAC). Well, I hoped disabling checkboxes on network adapter's power management would prevent bluescreens, it just makes them occur during runtime rather than just on transitions to sleep / hibernation.

OK, I don't usually rant like that, but that thing with the phone was frustrating. I suspect it's actually a bug that was fixed with the supposed "flashlight issue update". The issue being flashlight going off soon after screen is off. I did install the update over the weekend, but it appears that flashlight issue wasn't a mere flashlight issue, but interfered with processes in general.

When I updated the phone the first time when I got it, it pulled the update with the flashlight issue, even though subsequent fixed version was available, but only for manual download. The newer version was only installed last weekend. Yesterday I installed DontKillMyApp, ran the benchmark for 5 hours, it passed with 100%, which is the best score. It seems the OS update only took effect recently, maybe until then, old cached compiled code was still active or something. Today I ran MiXplorer's HTTP file server and didn't experience it dying so far after locking the phone.

Will see how it behaves throughout the week. Hopefully this was really just a bug in older version. Before, I flipped every possible battery optimization related setting and nothing.

Made myself a little "control box" for working on motherboards. Simple and effective. Printer kinda splooged on the "P" in "PWR", but not worth re-printing for that little defect.

Yes, you can buy things like this, much nicer ones, or just use the wire harness alone, but where's the fun in that?

Spent the weekend printing projects and parts. Once I was done I printed myself a Super NES themed desk stand for one of my 8BitDo SN30 Pro's I use for all my controller needs on my modern machines.

Created and printed a quick and dirty little wall hanger to get my PC ProPad 4 hung on the wall and get it off my desk, it's hooked to my DOS system.

Finally, did some fine tuning to my printer and wanted to test a multi-color print. So, I went with a 4 color (3 filament change) Star League badge from The Last Starfighter. Looks like I my tweaks paid off, it came out quite nice for an original model Ender 3.

Spring cleaning. Well, that's more of an all-time relevant activity. So much crap...anyone else keeps ton of digital junk that really isn't needed, but still feels it'd be shame to delete it?

Just formatting everything would be liberating in a way and so much faster!

I know that feeling… I’ve recently had to do a lot of copying terabytes of files around different systems due to various issues, hashing, scripted zip testing etc. Will I use most of it ever again? Unlikely… but every now and again they come in handy.

I found a discussion on here from a few years ago looking for various missing tech demos which I have mostly found in my archives over the past few days; and will make available for posterity at some point in the near future.

As everything online is temporal in nature the only way to guarantee access in future is to keep your own copies, and storage is relatively cheap. That and I’m a hoarder by nature 🤣

I also did some cleaning. I found a folder of duplicate video files that were completely unsorted, so I deleted it and only kept the files that were sorted by content.

I also found that the high idle temperature on my Ryzen 9700X is normal. I can only see the Tdie measurement in Linux instead of the individual core temperatures (even the BIOS only shows Tdie), and it seems to have an offset applied that varies with the actual temperature. It doesn't go much below 40°C, no matter what kind of cooling you have. I would still like to optimize idle power consumption, but I'm just letting it sleep after 60 minutes for now. The other thing left to do is get Avisynth running on Linux for QTGMC deinterlacing (instead of treating it as progressive like professional studios or using Handbrake's horrible deinterlacing that adds huge amounts of artifacts and won't output the correct frame rate - the settings that are supposed to do proper double-frame-rate deinterlacing just make two duplicate copies of each frame with different artifacts in each copy).

You're not alone. Literally been doing a lot of spring cleaning, both real and digital.

During my real cleaning, I'm also rewiring my entire home network. It really needs it. That's tomorrows project.

I'm also definitely a data hoarder, I've got data spread across several different external drives and removable media. I go through every so often and check them out to make sure all the data is still good and the drives are not showing any signs of failure and copy over stuff to get it off my PC if I'm not using it

I've imaged so much of my game collection over the years, as well as the SD/CF cards I use as drives in my old systems, so that's all spread out over a few drives. I've even got a flash drives chocked filled with drivers of all kinds. Others contain software archives, photos, docs, etc. All of them have a backup, just in case. For my super "important" stuff I use two Corsair "Survivor Stealth" drives, a primary and a backup.

Yeah, I've got a problem. 😜
