Hiya!

I remember at some point in the past I came across a utility for the 486slc2 cpu that all it did was enabling the clock doubling feature, no cache setups, changes, enable/disable etc - just the clock doubling was affected.
Anyone remember what it was ?
I know this can be done with something like "cyrix.exe -cd" but I am looking for something more streamlined plus it bugs me I cannot remember what I was using.
Thanks in advance for any info/tips! 😀

Are you talking about the Cyrix Cx486SLC2 or the IBM SLC2 ?

You mentioned "cyrix -cd", implying it is a Cyrix processor, but the Cyrix Cx486SLC2-50MP is locked on 2x mode. Thus, you must be referring to the IBM SLC2 part? The IBM and Cyrix parts use different software to control clock doubling.

I am specifically asking for the TI 486SXLC2 cpu , in my use case I have full bios/system support for L1/L2 caches but not clock doubling
to my knowledge anything made for Cyrix cpus will be compatible with the TI as well

thanks for that , will also check it as it seems more specific to sxlc cpus

It's the only util that I know of that changes the multi. It does work fine with the SXLC. Report how it goes with your CPU 😉

I am confused as to the goal. cyrix.exe and 486cache.exe can both change only the CPU's multiplier if commanded to do so.

According to the OP, we are looking for a DOS utility that only has the ability to change the clock multiplier on SXLC2 or SXL2 CPUs. I don't know what app this could be.

don't think there is anything confusing about it: had a utility once that only did the clock doubling enable and nothing more and I trying to find it again
it seems though that it is more obscure than what I initially thought...

I only remember it had a guy's name in credits and all it could do was enable clock doubling. I found it online sometime in 2001-2004 and used it with a cyrix 486slc2 upgrade. That's about it though, I remember nothing more... 🙁

I know you say it is solely for clock doubling, but it looks like this can be used for just clock doubling.

I believe it was made by Improve Technologies

cache486.exe is a utility designed to enable clock doubling (and potentially cache management) for 486-class CPUs, such as the Texas Instruments 486SXLC2 or Cyrix Cx486SLC/e, particularly as part of the "Make-It-486" upgrade kit. Based on available information, it was developed by Improve Technologies, a company known for producing upgrade solutions for older PCs like the IBM PS/2 Model 30 286. The exact individual author isn’t specified in historical records, as software from this era often credits the company rather than a person. It was likely released around 1993, though this is an estimate based on contextual evidence.
