Beware no ! - this one reaches much further down in time
Most of the machines you find here will actually work better WITHOUT the internet!

Floppy Disks pahhhh you young ones have no clue about punch cards and tape drives ...now that was real data transfer !

If that's not archaic enough I'm sure there are some dusty magnetic drums around here and a few worm drives, might even be some magnetic core memory modules in there too.

This hole goes well beyond the Internet, right past the World Wide Web, and even past Builtin Board Services.

It's a deep one, but there's a LOT of cool and useful stuff scattered about down here. 😀

ARPANET might be down there too.

Sir or madam, i'll have you know that I have a cassette deck equipped TI99/4A, and know how to use it! (Using a recently manufactured Onn shoebox recorder)

I can even browse the internet with it!

TI-99/4A!

That was this geeks very first computer, circa 1981! I may have owned and loved others, and the TI was definitely not the "best" of the bunch, it's still my favorite!

Seriously thinking of getting one... they can still be had pretty cheap, unlike some other classics. Build myself a FinalGROM99, maybe a speech synthesizer, then I'm all set!

Now.... if I can just talk my wife into it. She's not a big fan of all the "junk" (as she calls it) I come home with when I go down this rabbit hole. 😜

Consider a FinalGrom and a TiPi.

Between the two, the only thing missing would be a SAMS in a PEB box. I am of the opinion that the TiPi might possibly be convinced to simulate SAMS as well, but am not savvy enough to do the needful. The Final Grom99 however, *IS* able to simulate SuperCarts, including the miniMemory.

The TiPi mostly simulates the disk system, BUT also gives a simple telnet portal to the Pi on the other end, and that means it can be used to interface with a text mode browser running in the Pi, like Lynx.

Another function it provides is serial UART simulation/passthru with the Pi. I have repeatedly asserted at AtariAge that this is just a few pokes away from being able to drive MIDI instruments, but it keeps falling on deaf ears. (In specific, I suggested attaching the analog audio output of the pi to the AudIN line on the side port, and setting the pi in Mono audo downmix mode. The pi could then be used to render complex modern soundfonts, and present the audio onto the mono audio input line, on demand, as triggered from midi messages sent to the pi over the serial uart. Combined with the normal TIPI function to write files (which the Pi can see as ordinary files), and the Telnet function (which can be used to make the pi move files around, and or, to edit configuration files or restart daemons on the Pi), it should be possible to generate wavetable files with the TI, save them via Tipi DSR to the pi, then instruct the pi to load them as instrument patches, and play them on command as midi playback, with something like FluidSynth or Timidity. Some very sophisticated game audio could be implemented this way, with the Pi as just an accessory. The internal tone generator would be completely free for normal use, as well. The TI's audio system does hardware mixing.)

There's a LOT of untapped potential in a TiPi for an enthusiast.
