... and how did I ended there?

Did I broke some thread in this forum, when I decided to remove some of my useless posts, that are most recent in some old, forgotten and stuck threads?

Do I owe a detailed personal explanation for all my edited/deleted posts in some threads to some overacting moderator, who didn't even give me a warning when he decided that I was doing something suspicious or wrong here?

Hey, Mr./Mrs./Ms. moderator who restricted me of editing my own posts here, please be so kind to answer this, thanks!

Vogons doesn't like people deleting posts even if you think they are useless or irrelevant. All posts are retained for transparency for future readers, its possible that even if you consider a post useless it may contain useful details so Im on the side of keeping every post as it maintain the entire conversation in a thread.

IIRC its part of the rules.

Ok, I see. But my posts, that I decided to delete does not break any thread. They are last in the threads, otherwise there is no option to delete them at all. And some of them are really useless i.e. with zero useful information, while for some other posts (with useful attachments) I intended to publish same informaion in more appropriate threads and I see no reason to keep them.

And, yeah, we all know how some of the moderators are interpreting the rules - by their own double standards. I'm not gonna mention the regular suspect here (probably it's against someone's rules to criticize an overactive subjective moderator), but it's not hard to guess who I have in mind.

If the moderator who restricted me from editing my own comments was actually that concerned about what I'm doing and why, he could have sent me a PM and gotten a response with explanation, but he wouldn't.

Look at reddit with all the deleted/redacted posts and comments, it's a mess. If people start doing the same here it would just break everything. It's bad enough that early photo uploads on external image hosting sites are nearly all lost, I don't want to see vital information gone just because someone wants to erase their online past. Mistakes and incoherent ramblings are part of this site.

Excuse me, can you read with understanding please?

I deleted (or at least I tried to, 'til the moderation "took over") a couple of my old comments, which are in last place in long forgotten threads. Not in the beginning, not in the middle of the thread, but in its very end. I repeat and clarify again for those who find it more difficult to understand the text - last comments in a forgotten threads with zero useful information and zero comments/answers after them. Do you get what this "breaks"?

And since I'm now deprived of the "luxury" of having an "edit" button (for my own comments, not other forum member's) at all, I'm writing a new comment:

I don't need to read comments from advocates of the moderator (I'm still only guessing who he is) who has just decided that I'm doing something very wrong and against the rules. I expect the subject in question to show here who he/she really is, and if possible to sort out exactly what and where did I "broke", so to impose such restrictions on me.

Thanks for the attention.

Position doesn't matter here, its about transparency and maintaining thread conversation integrity, I get that you think they were useless but others may not and Vogons doesn't want people just randomly going back into old threads and deleting posts. To be honest the limits here on post deletion and editing are pretty generous but it sounds like you have tripped a flag designed to prevent people from "cleaning house: and deleting their posts. Yes people have done that in the past and it makes a mess of old threads, they even went as far as just editing all their posts with a script to be just a "." which not only breaks threads it causes a ton of lag on the back end.

If its an old thread just leave it be, its not hurting anything being there.

Edit - I doubt calling out the mods will work here, if anything itll likely make your case worse, the limits are pretty generous so it makes me wonder just how much editing and deletion you were doing. Vetz can help you out !

It's no moderator who put you on this edit restriction, but the forum software. There are automatic protections that triggers in these type of scenarios. They are there to protect from thread nuking as others have already mentioned.

It's a bit hard for me to see which edits that have been done. The administrators probably have better overview. I'll raise this in the mod section and we can take this further over PM.

Thanks for the input, vetz!

At least this time it was not the regular suspect with his double standards on the rules 😀

Now this is something new, that the forum software "decides" and deploys restrictions. What a good mini-training for the forthcoming artificially-intellectual driven digital "paradise" 😁

Yeah, I recently got auto-flagged by this for removing some old pictures from several of my build threads and replacing them with new (updated) ones. This "offense" prevented me from editing my own posts for 48 hours.

I think this system needs to be looked at, as it can't seem to distinguish between legit use cases and actual mass deletion.

Yeah, but I'm not "cleaning the house" as I'm still here and asking what's the problem to delete a couple of useless old comments. As I already explained here, I intended to open a new thread on one topic, that I've commented in the past and after I had zero answers. This way I may rise the problem without waiting for someone to "rise" the dead thread and I see no harm in deleting the last useless comment in such a thread. In other case, after some more motherboard tests, I intended to transfer the useful information in more popular or specific threads and I don't see any harm in that.

I can get along with humans, but I have no chance with the algorithms of so called "artificial intelligence" even if it is a very primitive form of "ai" like forum software with poorly implemented protections against abuses by users 😁

You were flagged for two days, but in my case I'm "fragged" 😁 Well, at least now it's clear that the forum software "judges".

I'd suggest the "edit reason" field to be made mandatory for filling (even though the software has no way to read and understand it), 'cause hardly most of the users (including myself) bother to use it in most of the cases. This may also be a kind of protection from the intentions of someone who have decided to delete or "empty" most or all of his comments in a thread or in the forum. As for the software algorithms "deciding" that deleting the last post in a thread is a big problem... I'll just leave it without comment 😀

I too dislike the editing restriction, have fall foul of it myself.

I can fully understand the need to prevent nuke and pave users and the users who go on wholescale editing via scripts but normal users shouldn't ever have to deal with the editing restrictions if they are your own posts and you are an active member and the post is only receiving minor edits.

I suspect that to actually improve the algo to be able to uhh tell legit from nuke would require a fair bit more processing ability than the forum software provides.

I have little doubt Vetz can get to the bottom of it and "Fix" the issue for you, but at least you know now that yes itll spank you again should you hit that limit again.

I would prefer it to not be there at all but I can understand why its there, if you have ever had to deal with a Luser nuking a dataset out of spite or spreadsheet because they got fired youll know just how damn annoying it is to fix.

The big brain move here is to just get rid of this automatic detection crap altogether and instead make an admin script which can just revert all user edits made within X amount of time to fix it after the fact

Most of the times I've used the "Edit" button are the same. I've also often had to change whole phrases or sentences after reading what I've already posted hastily, as english is too far from my native language. Sometimes I've also had to add more text to an already posted comment.

I'm just suggesting another solution to a possible problem where someone has decided to cover their tracks maliciously, rather than waiting on what happens automatically without the option to explain the situation if a post is edited/deleted without breaking the thread (last post in the thread can't break anything, right?).

I'm against any limitations in real and virtual life imposed through an automated system (or "ai") with no human involvement for controlling possible errors caused by some ill-conceived algorithms. If the forum code "decides" to automatically enforce restrictions or penalties, it would be nice at least to have a script which automatically sends a warning PM to the user and to moderators, if the user continues to overuse "edit" or "delete" buttons within a certain time interval.

I used to edit typos in my early days, then some time passed and saw people not make fun of typos anymore, and then didn't bother to edit to fix them

Usually I only use the edit button to attach an attachment or for some large thread

Just an example that it's even "cooler" to edit a post without an option for using the "Edit" button:

analog_programmer wrote on 2025-04-21, 00:35:

P.S. Unfortunately I'm now restricted from post editing by some forum's code for overusage of "Edit" button which is not a cool thing and I can't edit my previous post with the messed BIOS attachment. I still have another option to remove the messed BIOS zip-file from the forum's DB, so I'll just remove it without any editing in the post with explanation for the reasons why I'm removing the broken BIOS attachment.

And the result after removal of broken BIOS attachment from my previous post: Re: DIY Bios Modding guide Jan Steunebrink k6-2+/3+ 128gb

Thank you, forum's "ai" for your auto-moderation! A BIG THANK YOU! 🤣🤣
