Has anyone been able to even install this game on Windows 7 or Windows 10?

I picked up the original discs on ebay and trying all the basic compatbility mode settings, and even copying the disc contents to Program Files (x86) does nothing. It's an old 32-bit game from 1997 and doesn't like 64-bit operating systems.

I did some quick Google searches and found some people having luck with the GOG version or the Ntro pack or whatever? I don't even know what that is.. I don't even know what version my retail discs are or if there is some way to patch it prior to installing?

I'v also read about some people using a few registry keys to get it installed.

Any ideas on this one?

The game doesn't install from CD. You need to install manually.

Copy the CD to the drive. Rename I76MAX.ZIX to I76.ZIX

For registry

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\I76.exe]
"Path"="I:\\I76"
@="I:\\I76\\I76.exe"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Activision\Interstate '76]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Activision\Interstate '76\1.082]

Change Path according to where you put game. You can rename i76.exe to disable the shims which may cause issue

Am I looking for these registry keys, or am I supposed to add them based on where I copied the contents of disc 1? Do I need to copy anything from Disc 2?

I put the contents of Disc 1 into ProgramFiles(x86) into a folder called I76. I renamed the file that you told me to.

But I'm having some trouble translating your registry examples. Am I creating a new key named I76 and then making a Dword for the path?

What is this part for?

@="I:\\I76\\I76.exe"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Activision\Interstate '76]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Activision\Interstate '76\1.082]

Thanks.

This is what I did so far...

I went here..

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\I76.exe]

And added the key called I76.exe

For the default string value I modified it and added "C:\Program Files (x86)\I76\I76.exe"

Then I created a new string value and called it Path and added "C:\Program Files (x86)\I76"

I'm just having trouble understanding what this is for.

@="I:\\I76\\I76.exe"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Activision\Interstate '76]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Activision\Interstate '76\1.082]

I actually got the game to startup just doing what I said above.. But at the menu it just keeps telling me to insert disc 2 when I try to start anything, but I already have disc 2 in my drive..

In default (@), put the executable location. The executable in the registry is named i76.exe regardless of how you name it in the actual folder.
In Path, just put the path where the game files are.

Correctly, it is string value.

@ stands for (default).

The HKLM path was useful atleast for version identification, I don't remember if the main game needs it but it was definitely needed to install Gold Patch

If you have multi CD drives, the game may have trouble seeing the CD. I have the exe renamed since Win11 EmulateHeap makes the CD audio music invisible to the game

Now I'm having another problem...

I got the game running and it looks and sounds fine (for the most part) and I'm using dgvoodoo and all of the .dll's that come with that (the ones for glide and directx/direct3d, I have all of them in the folder for the game).

I also got the nitro pack working too, and that works problem free.

The issue I'm having is in the base game, when I start a game, if I hit Esc, it doesn't bring up the menu, it just makes the screen flash for a second and then the sky textures glitch out....and that's it. I can't seem to access the games menu from the base game.

In the nitro pack though, hitting Esc brings up the menu and it works fine..

Any insight into this problem or ideas to fix it? I can't really play the game if I have to ctrl+alt+del out of it everytime I want to stop playing or access the menu.. Can't even save/load my game as far as I know..

I never had this problem. Did you try increasing the game resolution through dgVooodoo2 to the desktop resolution

Yes, I did all that.

DOn't know, never even saw that problem. Does it come from dgVoodoo2? Otherwise why not just use the Nitro Pack game?

Is there a way to play the original campaign through the nitro pack executable? Cause' as far as I can tell, they're different .exe's with two different sets of content. It's like the nitro pack is more of a separate game than an expansion.

Oh yes I forgot about that. Can you try the base game in d3d? Use the parameter -d3d on i76.exe

Is D3D preferred over Glide for this game? Do you know which one runs it better?

I generally run on D3D regardless

Okay, so I tried both a -d3d and -glide argument for both .exe's and configured the settings in dgvoodoo as well, and the nitro pack is running/looking great. It's obviously using hardware acceleration now, with either of those commands in the shortcut.. The main game, however, is still running in software mode.. Any ideas?

I went back to the game. I am obviously having more problems than before.

Edit: Okay got things sorted now. My base game was 1.082. It doesn't even launch. I installed "I76GPAT8.EXE" and it crashes with d3d parameter. I then installed "I76GPAT16.EXE" and it does fine with d3d and ddraw and glide probably

Where can I find the executables for those patches? 176gpat16.exe? And how would I go about telling the registry that? Cause I did end up just copying disc 1 over to Program files (x86) and that's how I got the main game running.. The nitro pack I actually was able to do a regular windows install with the disc in Windows 10, without having to fight it at all.. I don't know how, but it just worked..

Download Gold Patch here: https://www.howgeek.com/2009/08/20/interstate … feedback-patch/

For registry, its the same I said before, Change I to your C drive and let 1.xxx be your game version
