First post, by farvardin
Hi, I've composed an album dedicated to the MT-32, it's called "Espaces lointains" (distant spaces). I've started to work on the compositions after I've setup my mt32pi and I've also used MUNT on my PC. Then I've got my hands on a real MT-32 hardware and I've recorded everything on this one:
You can listen to it:
- on Bandcamp: https://garvalf.bandcamp.com/album/mt-32-espaces-lointains
- on spotify: https://open.spotify.com/intl-fr/album/3wKMtu … vl8XHFPkHhyf3Xs
(the midi sources are included as bonus on bandcamp, but I'll probably also release them on my website sooner or later)
These tracks were composed between 2019 and 2025, and I've tried to get out of my comfort zone a bit, I have to admit that apart from “alternative” music such as Metal, Dungeon Synth or Gothic/Dark Ambient, I don't know much about it, I've never been interested in what was on the radio, even when I was a teenager.
In retrospect, however, I have the impression that the mainstream, pop and commercial music of the 80s and 90s is qualitatively much more interesting than that of the 2000s onwards.
Although I have no real knowledge of pop composition techniques, I did grow up listening to the theme music of series like MacGyver, Airwolf, K2000, Manimal, Masters of the Universe, V, Street Hawk (yes, I know, it was so good!), and I think that indirectly influenced me.
I've enjoyed the “Synthwave” revival, which nostalgically recaptures the codes of this retro music, but sometimes the homage turns into a bit of a parody, and I didn't want to get into that, especially as using exclusively free software “limited” my editing possibilities. In short, I preferred to give up the arms race (hardware, software) and stick to the fundamentals of music, because I knew that if I didn't I'd lose out.
Some tracks were composed exclusively on the Atari ST using Cubase (1, 4, 8, 13), others were composed using my favourite DAW, MusE, which uses Cubase's codes to some extent (3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 15, 16), and to my knowledge only tracks 11 and 14 were created using LMMS. The second track was composed on a Yamaha QY100, then reworked in MusE.
Not all these tracks were initially intended for this album, I had composed a few tracks for the battleofthebits.com website (this type of “competition” encourages you to work on new music and finish it on time), but also for linuxmao.org
