Hello there,

fan of old PCs here.

I recently got a Socket 370 MoBo that I wanted to use on a project.
Unfortunately, after plugging in a Geforce 4 Ti AGP-Card, to maybe get around a hickup during Windows 98 install, the board no longer provides 5 V to the PCI and AGP Ports.

The PSU is fine and I tried multiple PSUs,
Monitor even turns on (but no picture of course),
Mainboard was working before with a Geforce FX.

The Board is not in the best condition (eg scratches on Caps), but I was hoping to see if my planned config would work before doing all the repairs I had planned.

Before I trace the 5 V pins starting at the ATX-Connector or start replacing at maybe the bigger caps,
I was hoping someone might be able to point me at what to inspect first.

There was no smell or smoke during the incident, also I did not see any obviously bad parts yet.

I'm hoping to safe the board, so thanks for any hints.

Cheers!

What board?

Hmm.
Noname baby at in yellow brown from that era.
Reeks of Elite group/pcchips etc

There's a pretty good chance that if you did actually cause this, some resettable polymer fuses will come good in a few hours/a day.

I'd pull it out, pull the battery, leave it on a table or something for a day or 2 and see what happens.

Thanks. I already did that, but no luck:
I tried again just today, after letting it sit over the weekend.

still no 5 V and also all 3 Poly-Fuses I found have no resistance - from my understanding that would mean they are good - correct?

I know that the board / brand does not have the best rep, but I need to use a Baby-AT board and really wanted to go with a Pentium 3 (rebuilding the Win98-Machine I used to have).
This is just what I (reasonably) could come up with.

Cheers!

Fuses should measure near zero ohms of resistance, same as when you touch your leads together. You might consider pulling the board and checking for any blown traces on both sides of the board if indeed your fuses are ok

Found it:
bad SMD Ferrite Bead (L1) near ATX-Connector resulting in open circuit and no V-Core.

I'm sure 5 V was unavailable to PCI before, but maybe I misread the diagnose board in a hurry.
and there were other observations that pointed at the 5 V issue...
Coming back today I found that suspicious Inductor.

Removed it and bridged it until I find a replacement.
Board is alive. 😀

Cheers!
