2GB DDR500 - lets a go

Think these were the fastest DDR1 sticks that came out.

Nice! I can safely say that high clocked DDR 1 is not something you find every day. I don't think I've found a single stick of DDR higher than 400Mhz since I started deliberately collecting "old" stuff in 2015.

I remembered buying some OCZ DDR500 back in the day so I just checked my newegg order history and found that I bought a kit of 2x1GB OCZ PC-4000 DDR-500 back in 2006 for... oof......... $210. 😱

I think I was desperate to make Oblivion run better on an Athlon X2 at any cost... and the expensive RAM probably didn't do squat because the game ran so bad in CPU limited situations like cities. Still, it was cool to have such a nice memory setup for my my old DFI Lanparty Nforce 4 Ultra board + Athlon X2 4200+.

Surprisingly, I was smart enough to pull that insanely expensive memory out before using the board to build a friend a gaming PC in ~2007 when I upgraded to a Core 2 Duo E6750. He wasn't going to maintain an OC, so it made more sense to just use DDR400. In 2012-2013 I realized the RAM was still worth a bunch of money so I sold it for at least $100, which wasn't bad at all.

I generally keep a close eye for the rare stuff but this is the first PC4000 I've been able to catch.

I picked up these over the last year or so though

I've been looking for some PC-4000 for forever now that is not crazy priced.

From an "untested" lot with potato camera pics, I think I have 4x OCZ 256MB PC4000 sticks and a Corsair unknown size PC2-9600.

While I was looking stuff up, I found some PC4400 (528Mhz) and found that 550 and 600Mhz DDR1 was also released.

Of course everything over PC3200 (400Mhz) is just binned PC3200.

Some of it is PC2700 overvolted and binned, the Samsung chips were popular for it. IDK if the sparky meatball is recalling right, but the chip code was something like TCW3

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Pretty sure you can slow a drive down.
Either with software, or simply putting it into a pio mode.
Not 100% sure the last would work, but it doesn't make sense to run at full spin speed when the data rate is so low.

I use cdslow 5.2 in win98

Got two packages today. One was a motherboard I sent back to its psychopath seller. The other one thankfully made my day, which is a cool boxed K6-2 350

Can you post a picture of the cooler?

Unfortunately I can only post a photo of the cooler as shown in the box. While I am not a collector of sealed products (barely-sealed in this case), I am keeping it stored away for now until I think of where to use it on.

Today I got an IBM/Matra VLB motherboard with a 486SLC2 -66 and 16MB RAM. Had some Varta-based corrosion but still works with external battery. I'd heard of both 386 VLB boards and the 486SLC2 but never ran into either in person until today.

3swtQVo.jpeg

It's a neat little system but that CPU runs hot even with the fan. Performance seems to be somewhere between 486DX-33 and DX2-66, when it's not something where FPU or memory bandwidth are critical. Quake in DOSbench got 2.1fps and that was with a VLB card. Doom got 15fps at max settings.

Once I'm done with my proper 486 builds and the M590 I might put it in my spare AT case. ISA cards for now since I don't have any unused VLB and with the 16-bit bus it won't get nearly the speed boost that a proper 486 does.

That's a Win95 CPU
I had one when Win95 was Released.
I don't remember if I had the 300 or 333 CPU

Got my hands on a New-Old-Stock original keyboard for my Compaq Deskpro EP. 😀

Honestly surprised by how sturdy this one feels, compared to later Dell and Microsoft membrane keyboards. Just need to get my hands on a Compaq branded Intellimouse now and i'll have a full Compaq desktop. 😀

Did have some blemishes from long-term storage, but nothing too serious.

I have the British language of that keyboard.
It's difficult to explain to others how sturdy it really is, as the pictures make it look like it's just another ordinary keyboard.
I never opened mine but I think there is a huge metal bar inside.
By the way, out of curiosity, what language is that?

i had the Spanish version for about 15 years and took a beating everyday because it was my keyboard in the bench while repairing computers at home. Was very compatible with everything (PS2 to any adapter), and it needed to be: USB was prone to do weird things outside of Windows.

while the structure was fine, it started to develop malfunction on the membrane. Today i use a K400+ but is nowhere near the same. Its convenient ,wireless and lives in a specific 3d printed shelf above the monitor, but not as satisfying.

It looks like a thermal deformity from touching a hot object.

As I've had it explained to me, it's caused by a chemical reaction between the plastics in the device and cable, resulting from prolonged contact. There are marks like this all over the back side of the keyboard, wherever the cable was been pressing against the keyboard.

It was factory sealed anyway.

That's exactly what it is.

The plasticizer leeching out of the cable and deforming the rigid plastic shell.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.
