IBM thinkcenter M50 8187 with an i865G chipset has a fully functional AGP slot in XP. In 98 this board will force every card to run in PCI mode with no way to change it.

The system seems like the ultimate 98 AGP based system if it weren't for this issue.

dumb question. are the chip set drives installed? are you sure it's actually running at pci speeds and not just reporting it? I had a few video cards that in 9x would run at agp 1x if the agp speed in bios was set to auto.

Yes on a fresh install I do chipset drivers then graphics then everything else.

Bios has AGP aperture settings that I've played with but nothing to disable AGP. With no changes in the bios and installing XP the system has full AGP support as listed in the Nvidia control panel, Dxdiag, HWinfo and 3dmark2001.

Performance is definitely slow in 98 and 3dmark seems about 2/3 of the performance I'm used to with similar setups.

Gpuz result?

I built:
Convert old ASUS ASC boardviews to KICAD PCB!
Re: A comprehensive guide to install and play MechWarrior 2 on new versions on Windows.
Dos+Windows 3.11+tcp+vbe_svga auto-install iso template
Script to backup Win9x\ME drivers from a working install

Have you disabled integrated GPU in BIOS? I had a similar problem with the Compaq Evo d310 and i845G: the dedicated AGP functioned as PCI (the "AGP was turned off" in Everest), after the chipset driver was reinstalled, the AGP is already working properly.
This is what Intel itself reported in the readme:

Issue: After installing the Intel(R) Extreme Graphics Driver
to utilize the integrated graphics capabilities of
the Intel(R) chipset, software support for the AGP
function of the chipset is disabled in systems using
the Windows* 98, Windows* 98SE, and Windows* ME
operating systems.

Solution: If a user wishes to install an external AGP graphics
card subsequent to installing the Intel(R) Extreme
Graphics Driver on a system using a Windows* 98,
Windows* 98SE, or Windows* Me operating system,
the Intel(R) Chipset INF Utility must be re-installed
to re-enable software support for AGP functionality.
(In addition, the driver associated with the graphics
card must also be installed.)

I know, mine was i845G, not i865G, but who know.

GPU-Z doesn't work in 98. All the other programs agree that it's in PCI mode. I've never seen PCI mode only 1x AGP if it's not working right.

After installing the chipset drivers in 98 it listed the AGP port in device manager as a PCI-to-PCI bridge AFAIK. I had to force it in device manager to search for a driver, it installed an AGP driver for i865/p/e/GV which through me off. I was thinking maybe this is a GV chipset but windows XP utilities disagree.

The bios doesn't have a disable for the internal graphics but it lists the Nvidia GPU as the display device.

I never installed the intel Extreme graphics driver. So according to this I should just be able to install chipset then graphics drivers on a fresh install and have working AGP. Maybe I should try a different driver.

Hey Intel, your driver page sucks ass.
