hi i downloaded the 1640 software from dos days as I thought ide give that a try I've put the 4 disks files on four floppy disks
i put disk 2 in and type gem it loads and says to put my desktop disk in so I put in disk 3 and it goes to desktop but then a message comes up saying
The Gem desktop cannot find the documents
DESKLO.ICN or DESKHI.ICN or DESKTOP.INF in the dos search path
then nothing happens would you have any ideas as to fixing this problem

Hi, I'll need two more days. I'll try to install PC1640 GEM, but I need to setup an suitable emulator first.
And since I can't run PCem right now (PC broke), it takes a bit longer.

Hi again, I've copied the folders of GEM but I can't extract disk 1.
I need to set up an emulator to write back that disk somehow, using that DOS utility.
Unfortunately, I'm on a Mac and merely have DOSBox at hand, rather than PCem v17..
I'll have to experiment a little bit, maybe it works without disk 1.

The early Amstrad PCs were peculiar systems with some proprietary elements. I'm note sure if software intended for them will work on standard PCs.

What mouse protocol did they use? I remember the mouse used a DB9 connector, was it a serial mouse, or something strange Amstrad invented?

hi I cant Remember what type of mouse the Amstrad 1512 used that being the connection all I remember is that the mouse that came with the Amstrad 1512 system had 2 buttons on it it was quit a good design that being it was very comfortable to use in your hands

on my windows 98 pc as I thought I might have some luck but unfortunately it didn't work throe dosbox either

No DOSbox emulates a standard PC. You want something that emulates an Amstrad PC1512. I think PCem has such a mode, but I have not tried it myself.

The batch scripts seems to be a bit of a mess. What I've done is to install DOS from disk 1 to C:. And then run the executable from drive A: (disk 2) to start it. It will ask for a disk 3 which should also be drive A: (doesn't look at drive B:).

To start it go to A: (disk2), change directory to GEMSYS and run GEMVDI.EXE.

OK I got it working in PCem.

You need to use the CONFIG.BAT batch in the SUPPLEME directory on the fourth disk to install everything to the HDD

Of course, you must first partition and format the drive. You may also have to run SYS C: to make it active (I forget how this works)

You want the IMG format floppy drive images. The ones I downloaded from Cliff Lawson's website many years ago don't work.

ETA: OK this is PC1640 not PC1512. I still haven't tried setting that one up.

hi every won I've managed to get the Amstrad 1512 system disks that I downloaded using PCem I've made a windows 3.1 and windows 95 in PCem
the program works really well.
I still wonder why the Amstrad system disks that I downloaded don't work on my actual windows 98 and windows 3.1 machine it seems strange
that it works on emulated machines and not on my actual hardware pcs
anyway I'm just glad I can use the program even if its on a emulator

Software probably requires specific hardware. I know 1512 used unusual CGA video adapter which supported non-standard video modes. Software written for that isn't going to run on modern VGA cards.
