I know that Unreal is really optimised for 3DFX Glide systems, but does anyone know of a hack or unofficial patch that works on Win9X that improves performance with DirectX?

I have a Voodoo 5 system with a Slot 1 PIII and the game runs smooth as butter, but I also have a much more powerful P4 system with a GeForce ti 4600 and the performance on that system is worse, frame rate is very jumpy.

Would be great if there was some kind of way to improve things.

My System: SuperMicro P6SBA Motherboard, Win98SE, PIII 600Mhz, 256MB Ram, Voodoo 5 5500, SB AWE 64 Gold Sound Card, Roland LAPC-I

Chris Dohnal made relevant improved Direct3D8/9/OpenGL1 renderers for those generations of Geforces, but for Unreal, oldunreal claimed the exclusive rights to distribute them in their patch installers. 😒

(also if by "DirectX" you mean directdraw softdrv then no there isn't.)

Thanks, yes I was aware of Oldreal, but as far as I know they only work on modern OS not Win9x, shame.

Just update Unreal to 226f and use OpenGL.

I don't think he's referring to softdrv via DDraw.

I run a patched OpenGL renderer with TNT2 and a GeForce 3 (Win95) and the game runs great on much less than a P4.

Just grab the older OpenGL patch, 2.1.0.6 I think. Forget DirectX. D3D was ass during Win9x.

[Install Win95 like you were born in 1985!] on systems like this or this.
