BTW, you can disable the dgVoodoo watermark by unticking the relevant checkbox on its DirectX tab.

I disabled it after making this vid:

Half Life (Original) (Disc only worked after copying files over to harddrive):

https://youtu.be/tWuy-NtGGLk

There's a bit of static with NPC voices.

That might just be how they were recorded back then. Is the static present if you turn EAX off as well?

A few years ago, I played Half-Life on my Win98SE retro rig with an Audigy 2 ZS, and don't recall any major issues with sound. That was with patch 1.1.1.0 applied to the retail CD release.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Core 2 Duo E8600 / Foxconn P35AX-S / X800 / Audigy2 ZS
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 980Ti / X-Fi Titanium

This is the Half-Life Generations budle. There's no static with software rendering. I didn't apply any patches though, it's just a straight CD install.

In GTA: San Andreas, if you modify savegame to unlock otherwise inaccessible Hot Coffee minigame and use ReverbSA, number of girlfriends have reverb in their houses, at least Denise, Michelle and Katie. Very rarely, it doesn't work. Though not realistic, it's amusing.

About Half-Life, there's MetaAudio plugin for current versions that replace sound system with OpenAL based sound system. But it's terribly glitchy on Audigy Rx's native OpenAL driver, if you stand at certain spot from specific sound source, it's not audible, even if you're very close. Not an issue with OpenAL Soft.

Additionally, MetaAudio + Sens_oal.dll = random crashes.

Does Halo Mcc support EAX? I gave away my boxed copy so I can't test it.

No.

Only the original PC release of the first Halo game (from 2003) supports EAX.

Max Payne 2 doesn't seem to want to startup.

I played through that game a couple of years back. It worked just fine with EAX enabled under WinXP.

If you're running it on a newer Windows version, I suggest checking the relevant PC Gaming Wiki page for possible solutions. In fact, I recommend doing that for every game from the XP era, as many of them have issues when played on modern systems.

That's some classic Sam Lake writing. He was the lead writer for the first two games, and also the original model for Max's face and body.

You can definitively feel his absence in GTA: Sao Paulo Max Payne 3. It's just not the same.
