I quickly tried it in Reaper, namely the timpani patch, but found it to be too loud with audible overloading, and even a limiter plugin can't save the situation. Seems the volume of at least this sample should be tuned down, if I'm not missing anything.

It is recommended to use it with VirtualMIDISynth, which should have fewer problems.

I don't think it is a problem of the Sforzando VST I use to play soundfont patches. I don't have any loudness problems with dozens of other soundfonts I use, apart from Crisis GM 3.51 soundfont, which is too quiet.

In order to achieve the same volume balance as Roland sc8850, the waveform exceeds the maximum volume by 0.xdb, less than 1db as I remember,
The sound should not have obvious audible distortion, I hope...

There is an obvious audible distortion when playing a timpani-heavy track, like this Heretic E1M9.

I uploaded two videos of SGM v4.0 and Yamaha TG300 playing E1M9 midi. I can't really tell the difference... have a listen

Both tracks have overloaded, but the SGM is distorted noticeably worse than TG300 - the latter has only intermittent distortion "clicks", while SGM has them all over the place.
