I'm wondering if there's any value in porting MC to DOS...

I think there's only one feature that MC has, but similar programs for DOS lack - FTP client.
Obviously, there's a bunch of people craving for such a program - Anyone know a DOS FTP Client with GUI or shell

From what I can see, neither of the two Win32 ports (the one with HX DOS, and the one without) has that feature.

On the other hand, there's an FTP client in FAR.

So, is it possible to run FAR via HX DOS ?
And does HX DOS support networking?

IIRC, MC didn't add an FTP client until much later, so that makes sense.

There are indications in the source code that it does, via WATTCP.

I have so far strongly preferred Volkov Commander because:
* It pretty much works on any machine a DOS can run on
* It's super small (... and FAST!)
* It has built in editor including HEX mode
* It can delete folders with content

At least one of the mentioned points will pretty much eliminate every other alternative.

I tend to use the beta of vc that can be forced for hires text modes. Very handy 100x40 on ET4000w32p or 80x50 on XGA2.
As long as another software does not fallback to 80x25 it stays at hires.

80x50 is available even on plain VGA.

Yes, but that is not the point here...I always wondered why I have to manually switch to hires in later VC or NC but it's never saved. The next restart it's 80x25 again. I recently found out that loading ansi.sys and switching in hires mode before starting VC or NC does the job. After that I am not forced to switch the resolution in the file manager every time I started it up. As long as no other program switches back to 80x25 the hires text mode still works.
