I can't even pass the first level because the game only responds to the mouse (and very bad), i'm using dosbox pure and no matter what i choose in the core controls option my xbox one joystick doesn't work, only the start and shoulder buttons work, and there's no controls setup inside the game nor the c: prompt

Wasn't it always like that? Mouse only with terrible control... makes you just crash into the canyon like an idiot not a pilot 😅

Nope, it supports a joystick with two buttons.

yes but the analogs of the xbox gamepad doesn't respond at all, and i use it for all ms-dos racing games

You are not alone: the PC version of Rebel Assault was the original and suffered from this (but still got rave reviews because people were more tolerant of such quirks back in the day provided the rest of the product impressed so). DOSBox keymapping to joystick functions may help somewhat but this was a game made for analog control which only got the precision digital treatment in its ports; even the Macintosh version supports keyboard. I like this game but would take it on Mac or 3DO any day.
