For many of us a good Pentium MMX has been something that always has been on the list of systems that you really need to have. My retro interest started more or less with a Pentium MMX that I had as a spare/extra computer when I was about 17. My main rig at that time was a Socket A system running Windows 2000 so running DOS-games was a bit of a problem. So I found a Penitum 166MMX with a motherboard in the scrap bin in my school that I could take home and play with. It was not the greatest setup of all times, the motherboard was (is, I still have it in the pile of stuff to repair) an Asus P55SP4V with SiS chipset and integrated graphics. It did work but it was not the best performer in any way. But it could do some basic overclocking taking the 166 to 263MHz (3,5x75). Time went on and a few year later it ended up in parts in some boxes when I moved and it stayed like that for a long while.

Fast forward to somewhere around 2018. A friend of mine were clearing out their attic and found an HP Vectra with a Penitum MMX. I didn't say no to that but I think my wife regrets telling me about it. That was the start of playing with old computers again.
So, a free MMX is always nice and since it was complete with a 15" CRT I was quite happy. Some things bothered me though... it was a HP, it didn't overclock, it was a desktop, it had some crappy SiS chipset. So it ended up in storage after I got another bunch of old computers (a pile of 386s, four 486s and some more).

But I always wanted an MMX. A good one with Intel 430TX chipset and a nice case. A period correct graphics card, maybe an SB64AWE and a Voodoo 1. More or less the MMX everyone dreamed about early 1997.

So lets build one 😀

Quite recently I traded some stuff for a bunch of Socket 7 motherboards where one of them was an Aopen AP5T, a pretty standard Intel 430HX board in baby-AT format. Perfect for my build!
Oddly enough I don't have any pictures of it outside the case...

The case is another story.... It had some interesting "modifications" when I got it, but it had an MMX-sticker on it that was enough to qualify as a given candidate for this build. As seen above it has a removable mother board tray and it was really easy to work in. Good design 25+ years ago, just how I like things!
And yes, it was a MMX in it... on a not so brilliant socket 7 mother board with Via chipset...

After some cleaning it is a quite good AT case with lots of space for good airflow and many devices. I ended up with a removable hard drive, 3,5" + 5,25" 360k floppy and CD-rom. Still room for more stuff in the future!

Moveable hard drive cage and space for two 92mm fans in the back. That was quite high-end in 1997!

To be continued in next post 😀

The most important thing in a build like this is the CPU.

So what would be more suitable then the Pentium MMX 166 that i found in the scrap bin in my school for about 25 years ago?

Ceramic MMX is not something I see very often. This one is a nice one with unlocked multiplier (can do 3,5x) and a solid overclocker to. It did run SuperPi in 300MHz many years ago, cooled with about -10C air a winter day. Most of its life was spent in 263mhz but for this build we are aiming for 250mhz (3x83MHz) to get the best performance.

Good cooling is essential when overclocking. You know that you have found a big enough heat sink when you have to bend the jumpers for the multiplier to make it fit.

A 80mm fan was professionally mounted with zip-ties. Sturdy enough and easy to replace when something breaks...

A testrun on the workbench. The graphics card got changed later...

The motherboard has a header for PS/2 mouse but I didn't have any suitable cable/bracket so I thought, how hard could it be to do one yourself?

Found my old USB -> PS/2 adapter that had stopped working, a good way to find a free mini-din6 connector.

Some soldering done, tried my best to strengthen it with some heat shrink tubing

And the final product with a almost proper connector.

For being things from my own scrap bin I'm quite pleased. And it was more or less free 😀
And it works!

And after a little while.. we have Windows 95C to play around in 😀

All done? Nopes!

It was almost done, so its time for some upgrades!

I did some digging around for another project and looked in my drawer marked "Matrox" and found another Matrox Mystique 220. I was convinced that I only had one and that was in my Pentium Pro, but apparently I have two of them. Nice!

So, lets make this build serious. A Diamond Monster 3D turned up in the mailbox, also something that was more or less pure luck. Super nice seller and I got some other fun stuff to.

Mounted in the case, ready to test (yes, it does work)

And the rest of the cards,
SB64AWE, CT4520
3Com 509b-combo. I did run out of 3Com 905B-TX that I usually use in all my builds with socket 7 and above.

Final system specs
Case: Unknown AT miditower, 200w PSU
Motherboard: Aopen AP5T, Intel 430TX
Memory: 64MB PC100 sdram
CPU: Pentium MMX 166@250
Graphics: Matrox Mystique 220 + Diamond Monster 3D
NIC: 3com 509B-Combo
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster AWE 64 / CT4520
3,5" and 5,25" (360k) floppy
6+10gb harddrives
32x cdrom

The only thing missing now is to clean up my desk and have some more fun using it. But as usual... building is the best part 😀

This is more of a DOS machine than Windows 95. I had Pentium 200 MMX back in the day. I ran mine just at 225 Mhz as I had a cheap PCChips board that didn't like high FSB. It was an upgrade from 386 DX 40 and I wasn't willing to risk damaging anything. After about a year I ended up upgrading to K6-2 300 and soon after K6-2 350. It was then upgraded to Celeron 433 that was OCed to 488Mhz. Maybe you could do a Mendocino build 😀. Some of them do run at 500-550Mhz.

Pentium III 900E, ECS P6BXT-A+, 384MB RAM, GeForce FX 5600 128MB, Voodoo 2 12MB, Yamaha SM718 ISA
Athlon 64 3400+, Gigabyte GA-K8NE, 2GB RAM, GeForce GTX 260 896MB, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Phenom II X6 1100, Asus 990FX, 32GB RAM, GeForce GTX 980 Ti

I'm thinking late DOS and early Windows95 games up to 1997. Quake, Red Alert, C6C, Carmageddon, all original 3dfx Voodoo games, POD and some more.

For more demaning games I have a few systems that is suitable, Pentium II 233 up to Pentium II 450, Athlon slot A 650 and Athlon Thunderbird@1200. Throw in some Pentium3 500 and a couple of AMD k6-2/3+ systems.... Well, there are space for a Celeron too, I have a case in the same style/design with a Celeron sticker... maybe that is some kind of sign to me? 😀

I have a Pentium 200 MMX/Voodoo 2 rig which I assembled to play just 1 specific game: POD (1997)

That game is so much trouble. This is the only machine I have that runs it properly.

Is this too much voodoo?

Agree this is where the MMX strong point.

This was the changeover period from dos to Windows, and also the "3D wars" were in full swing with a few different 3d API's competing to become the next standard.

Think the build matches the era just perfect. You have the Mystique for MSI titles paired with the V1 which on a MMX is perfect for early glide which have compatibility issues with later cards.
Thing is some games ran in dos, some windows.

Being a late dos rig, OPL isn't so important and given it'll spend time in Win95 the AWE64 does make alot of sense.

Good work on the PS2 adapter, but man that case is massive!

nice build and process! I have an old P166mmx with 64bm ram and unremarkable components, its great though i really don't use it much - almost everything i would run on it runs on gog, dosbox, patches anyway. However occasionally i use it, its still nice to have perhaps partly because i have owned it so long. I even have 98se as the OS and it all runs fast enough and fine

Aww, I've also got a Diamond Voodoo like that by chance)
If you have a proper CRT monitor, that's what people call fun)

This a picture of the case when a good friend of mine just got it in a huge loot of cases and parts. About 200eur/usd for a full car loaded with stuff in various conditions.

I took some time yesterday to set up a nice gaming desk in our basement. Didnt have much time or light to take any proper pictures though... but it works and play MP3 😀

The display is a 17", quite nice even if its not a trinitron.

Going to test some games tonight!
