A few years ago I recapped my Slot 1 Epox BX3 motherboard and began a fun restoration of the system after acquiring a video card for it.
It has:
1: 500 MHz CPU
2: Mix of PC-100 and PC-133 RAM
3: Voodoo 3 3000 AGP
4: Diamond Monster MX300 sound card.
Everything right now is, shall we say, stock stock stock.
At the time I refurbished it, I put a few titles on it - including Unreal Tournament, American McGee's Alice, Rollercoaster Tycoon, some Need for Speed titles...
My intent was to turn it into a pretty solid Windows 98 SE system for late 90s into early 00s titles while also being able to "powerhouse" a few DOS titles if I wanted. ISA slots are available, but I never populated them.
I was a little disappointed in the erratic frame rate with Alice (Quake/openGL engine). 30/40/50/70 depending on the area you are in at the beginning of the game. I refrained from installing more games figuring that perhaps I would want to upgrade the hardware here or there.
Then the machine sat for 8 years.
After finishing a 486DX2-66 and tuning up a Pentium MMX 200 just recently, I've once again turned my attention toward this Windows 98 SE build and wondered where I should take it.
Should I improve cooling and push the Voodoo 3? Go for a slotket solution? Abandon my original BX3 motherboard and move to S370? (Admittedly, I had a CUSL2 with 700MHz processor by the time Alice was out... but that mobo was recycled 20 years ago)
Some info:
1: This motherboard has an LX1668CDW, which claims it is "Compatible to VRM8.2 - 8.4 Specifications."
2: BIOS is Award based
3: Voodoo 3 is AGP. I don't have a good divider option if I go to 133MHz FSB. Haven't researched cards compatible with that higher speed. Speaking of which...
4: This board can go up to 133MHz FSB. There are a few stops between 100 and 133.
5: I have a Riva TNT2 Ultra AGP, Matrox G450 PCI, Geforce MX200 AGP, and a few other cards in the stash as a pivot to accommodate FSB bumps or just to move away from the Voodoo.
6: I have a few AMD-based processors with mobos stashed as well, but they all seem too new to use & are limited to 1.5v AGP, I think. (Asus K8V-X SE, A7V8X-X, and ABV-MX) I could obviously start over with any of them if win 98se with them is a viable option, but I bought this BX board back when it was new and well... I guess would prefer to keep it in the build.
Could those of you that have pushed forward with a slotket solution on a BX board tell me if it was "worth it?"
Do any of you run a Voodoo 3 paired with a faster/much faster CPU than a P3 500?
I am not trying to push this system just for a single game - rather because I didn't get far with the build before thinking it didn't quite get me where I would like to be in terms of performance.
Need to clear my head a bit regarding where to go, so I thought I would throw it to Vogons for a bit.
