Hi - I'm new here but I've been building PCs off and on since the late 1980s professionally and as a hobby.
I have decided to build a PC for the 'transition era' - 2D to 3D and from Dos to Win9x - I plan to dual boot Dos 6.22 and Win98se
I'm going to try to run the gamut, from early CGA/EGA game to around end of era DOS games including old 3D games.
Instead of an exact era-correct PC I grabbed a GA-6VEM mobo with ISA / PCI and Socket 370 - it came with a Celeron SL656 1.2Ghz (Tualatin core) and 128MB ram.
I thought it might be a little quick for what I want so I've ordered a Socket 370 Celeron 433MHz - this seems ideal for ~1998.
I'm asking for feedback re:
#1:-- 1.2Ghz Celeron or 433Mhz Celeron - I guess I will wait and test but I hope the 433 will be ideal?
#2:-- Also I'm considering a video card-the limit is it must be PCI and not cost an arm and a leg. Maybe a ATI Rage 128 (I had a Radeon 7000 back in the day...)
Gathered parts:
- ATX Case that I discovered needed a replacement PSU 🙁 - I'm using one I had kicking around - going to need to make a bracket to mount it or buy a period correct PSU.
- GA-6VEM mobo, 3 PCI, 1 ISA16, USB1.1 --- On Board Trident Blade 3D/Pro Media in VT8601T video -- what to get for video?
- 1.2Ghz Celeron or 433Mhz Celeron..? (Or quit being a dummy and test both?)
- 128MB Ram
- SB16 WavEffects ISA SB4171 -- New in Box, found in a storage closet at work - boss said I could have it -- hoping it doesn't cause too much pain in DOS...
- 1.44 Floppy Drive
- 40 or 80GB Seagate Barricuda - Will create a 2gb partition for true DOS 6.22
- HL GCE-8481b CD ROM - I hope to get the HL GCE-8481b working with both Win98se and as a CD drive in Dos
- SD to IDE adapter - for the fun/challenge of it
- Gotek USB to Floppy - for the challenge/not needing access to a hundred floppies with possible bad sectors on disk 10 of 10.. 😉
- HP L1910 4:3 TFT LCD monitor 1280x1024
