I got an X-fi Elite Pro SB0550. I have no idea if it works correctly hardware-wise. I tried to install it on 2 different machines with no success. Both with windows xp sp3 32bit.
The card is detected, drivers are installed but I get no sound. I can play a track, see the vu-meters moving, but no sound. I tried all outputs with headphones and speakers. Still no sound.
Tried official drivers and daniel_k drivers. On board sound is disabled in bios. Right now I'm on a system with Asus P5B Deluxe.
When I switch between the modes (entertainment, game etc) i can hear the relay clicking. Right now I have no idea if its a software problem or a hardware problem. Thinking of trying a different operating system. Don't know which one is more compatible (win 98, vista or 7), to maybe rule out driver problems.

Any ideas?

I had a similar issue on X-Fi Fatal1ty when I forgot to unplug headphones before moving the I/O Drive Box on another computer.
The behavior was like yours, the mixer meters were jumping, but there was no sound on mini-jack outputs.
I reconnected the I/O Drive back, then pulled out headphones. After that, the outputs worked as before, and without I/O Drive too.

So it looks like a X-Fi card remembers the state of headphone detection on I/O Drive Box, which blocks audio outputs on X-Fi card itself.
I didn't have time to research where X-Fi card stores this value (software vs hardware level), perhaps reinstalling driver would reset this state - otherwise it would mean it's on EEPROM.

If the problem is not in the driver, I recommend starting with 79L05.
A common problem with Creative PСI video cards.
