Is anyone familiar with the Matsushita EME‑263MG 3.5" 1.44MB floppy disk drive, the type with the 26-pin ribbon cable still factory-attached? It apparently only (?) appeared in some Tandy or GRiD laptops. I'm refurbishing a Tandy 3800HD laptop, and the original drive has failed due to a dead stepper motor. I wasn't sure whether I should continue looking to replace the entire floppy drive, or if there is a non-rocket science way to replace the stepper motor with something more current (2010s, 2020s, etc.), or if these things from the 1990s are nearly impossible to replace. Also, is it typical for a technician at a computer repair shop to be able to even handle such a job? Usually replacing a motor isn't a big deal, but with the precision required of a floppy drive, it may require more expertise than is worth even repairing. I'm finding that attempting to repair a Tandy laptop is a daunting task because of all the rare and proprietary parts (even the Conner CP2064 hard drive has a non-standard connection). My is assumption that any Tandy laptop enthusiast would have run into problems like this because of the 30+ year age of these machines. Comments and technical advice welcome, and thanks for reading this post. - Steve

How is the 26 pin ribbon cable connected in the motherboard? Could it be an idea to make an adapter cable and replace the whole drive to a standard one? I'd assume the pinout is the same as on earlier Toshiba's, see here: https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/tos … o-1-44.1247275/

There also exists 34pin to 26pin ribbon adapters like this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32868919406.html Perhaps that could be used?
Then you'd just need to order a loose 26 pin ribbon cable.

Beside that I don't know much about stepper motor replacement or if that would case alignment issues.

The 26-pin ribbon cable is soldered to the floppy drive, but the ribbon cable's other end fits into a slot on the Tandy 3600HD motherboard (similar to the way its Conner CP2064 hard drive connects, but with the hard drive the ribbon cable is not soldered at either end (much better). I'll take a look at the 34-pin to 26-pin ribbon adapter link you offered, and I think I know where to find a loose 26-pin cable, but I think with Tandy PCs, the pin mapping becomes a proprietary issue. It would be great to use an adapter to connect a standard floppy drive and, perhaps, bring the laptop back to normal life. Thanks for taking the time to offer advice!
