I have tried to test two CM-32L modules and one SC-55 module with an AWE64, but I haven't managed to get any of them to produce a single note in about 10 hours of testing! (Quite an achievement, I think you'll agree. 😉 )

I am using the supplied AWE64 "joystick/midi cable" connected to the AWE64 at one end, and its "midi in" lead connected to either the CM or the SC module at the other end.

When I run the Microsoft DirectX testing tool called "dxdiag.exe", for the Music tests I select the "midi out 330" device, and then click on the test button to hear some music, but no sound is ever heard.

Please can someone offer this thicko some advice? Thank you.

Best regards, Robert.

Doesn't the joystick/midi cable have a connector with MIDI IN/MIDI OUT? without it it won't work
If you happen to have the above you need to cross connect the cables to the CM32

Try the "MIDI OUT" connector instead 😉

Yay!!! Thanks sooooo much!!! Simply putting the AWE64 midi cable's "midi out" lead in to the module's "midi in" socket solved the problem completely!

😁 😁 😁

I think that all three units (2 x CM-32L and 1 x SC-55) are functioning correctly.

To test the SC-55 was straight forward. I simply had to play a .mid file.

To test the CM-32L, I downloaded the free LucasArts "Day of the Tentacle" non-interactive demo, and I also downloaded the free "Ultima Underworld 1" demo. I ran both inside a Windows 98 "dos box" environment. Both sounded fine, without any problems. For UU1, I even heard sound effects such as water effects.

My final external module to test is an MT-32. First of all, it doesn't have a headphone socket, so that could be a problem as I have no amp or mixer ATM. Also, I've heard that the MT-32 is more difficult to "get going" than the CM-32L.

If anyone knows a quick and easy way to test the basics out on an MT-32, I'd be very happy to try it out. I've actually had it for about 2 months now without ever hearing it!

Thanks.

I was put off testing the MT-32 because someone told me it needed a very slow PC (which I don't have) in order to use it properly. I just tried it now on a PIII-based system (my slowest system), and it worked fine. I found a pair of headphones which have a mono setting on them, and just plugged them in to the Left Audio port only at the back of the unit, and although the volume was quite low, I could hear that everything sounded fine. Pity I didn't test it sooner! 😦
