You need TCP Optimizer or know registry settings to tweak TCP parameters, otherwise, connection works miserably in XP. I remember with images on web pages that you could watch them load, like watching Hover! game loading progress bar on a 133 MHz Pentium. Vista+ automagically works properly with fast connections.

My downstream speed's supposed to be 1 Gbps, though I can't utilize it due to lack of cabling throughout the house. It's not bothersome unless you download a lot where these speeds really make a difference, I get by with Wi-Fi.

I'll look into TCP Optimizer as well. thanks.

I just got a used optiplex running 10 😉
Thought process = get it while you can, before 11 becomes the ONLY option

I recently setup Visual Studio 2022 on my work laptop. The setup complained about unsupported operating system (Win10 1809). Still, the main project at workplace compiled successfully.

Suppose I bought a laptop with a preinstalled Win11, is there a way to set up local accounts without re-installing the OS with modified settings from a homebrew USB stick?

Shift+F10 at the out of box experience to bring up command prompt.
Type oobe/bypassnro
Laptop will restart, and you will see a "I don't have Internet" option at WiFi selection screen. You can then make a local account.

That's cool, thanks!

Microsoft is rolling out the Extended Security support program for Win-10 now.
Its FREE if you have 1000 Microsoft Rewards points
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/rewards/about

I am good for another year until Oct 13, 2026

This will give me some time to find a good deal on some Nvme boot drives.
I think it is a good idea to extend support for another year because of all the electronics store closures in USA
And it can be expensive for a family of 4 if you have to buy everyone New computers.

Oh, what a great chance to spend 30 bucks for what should have been provided for free! Thanks Microsoft!!!

Won't even be a hack.
It'll just be the update files

I built:
Convert old ASUS ASC boardviews to KICAD PCB!
Re: A comprehensive guide to install and play MechWarrior 2 on new versions on Windows.
Dos+Windows 3.11+tcp+vbe_svga auto-install iso template
Script to backup Win9x\ME drivers from a working install

Some people still use Windows XP, even for online, and I'm supposed to be afraid to use Windows 10, because OH NO SUPPORT HAS ENDED? 🤣

Back in 2021 someone got mad at me on the Steam forums for still using Windows 7 online and said: "I hope something bad happens to you so you'll learn your lesson." It's been 4 years, I wonder what he meant by that.

I was quite unhappy that microsoft did not give me the option to extend support by 1 year- i had more than 1000 reward points, online account, online backup - nothing worked. Thus, i looked for alternative solutions.

1 - . The name you need to search for is tsforge - a script that extends the support period for 3 more years.

2 - IOT LTSC can be installed on top of an existing install and extends support until 2032.

I donno, I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to check and make sure you have a valid license for those security updates.

Win95/DOS 7.1 - P233 MMX (@2.5 x 100 FSB), Diamond Viper V330 AGP, SB16 CT2800
Win98 - K6-2+ 500, GF2 MX, SB AWE 64 CT4500, SBLive CT4780
Win98 - Pentium III 1000, GF2 GTS, SBLive CT4760
WinXP - Athlon 64 3200+, GF 7800 GS, Audigy 2 ZS

That's what it does with Win7 ESU patches, for instance.
You can always extract the files manually, but replacing system files outside the WU framework is prone to create problems later down the road.
Easier to hack the license check.

Don't worry. Someone will find the hack that enables it regardless of anything.

TBH, I find it equally annoying that M$ is trying to rip you off at every turn, and that you have to constantly resort to cheating to get around the ripping-off part.

But the most irritating thing for me is how the quality of M$ products, being paid software, has degraded beyond belief recently.

I have Win11 at work, and it's been awkward to use at best, and error-ridden to devastating effects at worst. To begin with, this month's update broke something that made remote desktop setups that we use via Amazon inoperable, forcing our IT guys to completely reinstall everything from scratch for each user. As a result I lost my custom spellchecking dictionary and autocorrect macros in Word that had been building up over a good number of years -- I never thought to make backups, considering how previously we smoothly migrated from Win8.1 to Win10 and then to Win11. What's worse, MSOffice somehow thought that the "new" custom dictionary from the remote desktop was the most recent version and overwrote the copy I (presumably) had locally on my work PC before I even discovered the issue -- and naturally, there were no backups ever made so it's lost irreversibly. Thanks Microsoft! And now we're stuck with the outdated version of Windows at the remote desktop that does not have the option to ungroup taskbar icons, as well as certain other options, but at least I kind of got used to this setup over the first half of this year so it's okay I guess? But it makes me wonder how they have the guts to charge all the money for their products which are not at all cheap and still deliver this level of subpar quality, and pretend that this is the normal way. Also I already mentioned that Win11 just puts its Copilot thing into every single application and aggressively offers it to the user at every turn. It's not hyper-intrusive yet but I absolutely don't want to use it at all, and I wonder what the IT people are thinking because from what I gather Copilot could access anything, including whatever sensitive information a company might have on its employees' PCs, and then it might end up God knows where? And still every time I start up or lock the OS, Win11 greets me with a fancy photograph or picture telling me how AI is paving the road to better future or whatever. "Winter is over and summer is here, it's GenAI to thank and cheer!"

Hehe, with Windows, something bad can happen as well to those with the latest version, and the latest updates - see eg. the current affair with KB5063878 and data corruption.

You can look at it like this. Or you can look at it as them trying to make money, while acknowledging that some folks will cheat to avoid paying, and they don't really care, nor do they go after these folks.

These stories don't really strike me as new. Windows used to fail in bizarre ways forever, as does most pieces of software with similar level of complexity. The only major change is that updates get more pushy with each generation, so it's easier to be hit by crap like this. I disable auto-update on all my Windows installs for this reason.

Yeah I've had 10 brick me out of my computer a few times thanks to its wonderful mandatory updates. It's one of the reasons I still use 7.
